Anyone else's folder tear up your pocket?
on: December 30, 2015, 11:26:20 PM
I'm sure if you carry a folder clipped into your pocket you know what I mean. My right side pant pocket gets destroyed rather quickly on all my jeans. It really starts to annoy me when it reaches a certain point. I have used the iron on patches before to patch holes in the knee and decided it was a very likely candidate for fixing this problem as well.

- Torn up pocket.

- The Climber helped clean the area up a bit. Mostly on the interior.

- The patch would be folded in half and slid inside as to sandwich the torn area.

- Iron it on and cross your fingers.

It held great and seems to be working very well. Only time will tell if it will hold up, but it seems like it should hold well. Only thing is if the ends start to roll and peel back on either or both sides from the knife handle and pocket clip. Again, only time will tell. It may look a bit funny, but that's alright. I rather not buy new pants just because the pocket gets ripped up quickly.

Heck yeah.  My pants get torn up too.  The 5.11 Taclite Pro pants that I have mentioned a few times are made heavy duty on this area for this reason.

I consider a shredded pocket to be a sign a virility and high intelligence.

A+ job with the patch.

Anyways, 99% of the time I'm in Gym Shorts, or Columbia Shorts. Super thin water wicking nylon. I have more of an issue with leathermans file nail notch on the end snagging the thin material of the pocket rim.

Does the iron on patch thicken it up a whole lot?

I was concerned it would, but I actually cannot tell a difference. It seems to almost have the opposite effect. What I mean is not it seems like my knife slides in and out of pocket with less resistance and not as much "lip" when the last bit of pocket clip is being removed from the pocket and has to be pulled over the "lip" of the pocket. Since the pocket was already shredded some of the material had been removed so it was thinner than normal. When I ironed on the patch it compressed everything so it kind of made the lip go away. The patch material is jean, but sort of plastic feeling so its a little slick which makes the knife come out easier.

This would be great for most. I was hoping for a thicker pocket and more grab.

I tend to just keep my folder in my pocket than using the clip if it has one.

You could double up on the edge of the pocket with a smaller iron patch before the bigger one to make it thicker.

I have done this fix a few times. I also have used leather. Just sew it to the pocket. Some jeans now have leather on them for this very reason.

More than once this has happened to me. Until I started slightly bending the tip up out of the way. I also wear a specific brand pant now so that seems to help also.
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

Its not the pocket clip that does it. Its just the scale of the knife rubbing while I walk and occasional knife deployment.

I have been watching what knives wear my pockets the most on all my jeans and I was kind of surprised with the results. The Spyderco's with G-10 or FRN handles were what I expected to cause the most damage as they have the "rougher" scales. Turns out the Sebenza (titanium handles) and my Griptilian with custom scales (6061-T6 aircraft aluminum, Type-III hard coat anodized) wear my pockets much more. While the Titanium and Aluminum feel smoother they are like a very fine sand paper that just grinds away at the pocket throughout the day.

Definitely. I really just want a thicker lip on the pocket so I can achieve that easily. I wish more pocket clips would use the "double dent" like the Sebenza.

Agreed, that is a nice feature of the Sebenza.

Sounds pretty reasonable. I'm used to spending $15.00 on jeans, but I would spend $35.00 if they were worth it.  :tu:
