Help me choose the tools/layout: 84mm mod
on: December 19, 2015, 07:50:17 PM
Here's what I have:

Red Alox Cadet w/busted blade spring
Vintage Alumnus w/scissors, backside awl and corkscrew
(Will get) Recruit or Small tinker

Main objective is to get scissors into the Alox Cadet. I am having a hard time deciding between the small blade and nail file? Also unsure between keeping the opener layer or dropping that and using a combo tool? If I keep the opener layer, I will use the spring from the Alumnus and include the backside awl. I'd love to have an inline 3d Phillips but I know that isn't going to happen.

Main uses I want:
Blade to cut (I do use a small blade often too)
Scissors to cut
Something to turn both phillips and flat screws
Nail file would be nice

Any other tools I'm missing that will work on 84mm?

I probably won't start this project until the new year, so I'm going to take my time and decide on the layout before beginning.

Oddly enough I was carrying my Cadet plus scissors mod today for the first time in ages.

Personally, and rather obviously, I went with the nail file.  Though I have to admit that I like the small blade as well.

I think I just answered my own question and found a way to have both the small blade and a file on board.

In this pic you see the backspring on the Alumnus with the corkscrew open, with the hook from a Super Tinker fitting perfectly between the liners of the Alumnus. See where I'm going with this?

So a hook with a file on a 84mm?
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

Yep, at least that's the plan.

So, the layout will be:

Open layer with backside awl
Scissors layer
Blade layer with large and small blades with backside hook file

You might have to shorten it a bit to fit, but it sounds like a good option

Is this correct?
84mm uses 2.25mm brass pin and the backside tool pin on a 91mm is 2.25?

If so, I may not even have to drill out the hook if it lines up well.

You shouldn't have to drill it out at all. I do believe that now most if not all of the back tools are 2.5mm or 2.2. So either way it will work.

Also the only back tools I have found smaller came off the 84mm and the older 91

Awesome, thanks!

Anyone have an extra hook with file they'd want to get rid of?

I believe you should be able to turn one tool around and have a combination of layers as follows:

Main blade / Pen Blade
Scissors
Combo tool / Nail file

or maybe ...

Main blade / Combo tool
Scissors
Pen blade / Nail file

or something similar

The only question I would have would be if the nail mark on the reversed tool (here Combo tool) can be accessed.  If you put the scissors as the middle layer it might allow easier access to the nail mark. You will also need an extra key ring spacer to properly space the reversed tool.

I'll see your Cadet with scissors and saw, and raise you serrated blade, 93mm awl, phillips, corkscrew, toothpick, tweezers, can key, precision driver (in C/S), and replaceable scales

I don't have the 84mm scissors yet. I do like a three layer Cadet Alox.
