MP400 question
on: February 25, 2016, 09:42:05 PM
I just got a brand new MP400. I really like the size of it, BUT, the first think I noticed is how difficult it is to deploy the knife blade. The handle has a notch, but the nail tick on the blade is on the inboard side (opposite the handle notch). The MP400's on Gerber's site look the same. Am I missing something? Seems to me like the blade should be located so the nail tick lines up with the notch on the handle.

Are they supposed to be that way? Sorry no photos.

thanks

I just spoke to Gerber customer service. They confirmed, that is the way it is designed. They did away with the old blade with the slot all the way thru because the got many warranty returns due to blades breaking at the slot. they said the MP600 used to be that way but the changed it, they have no plans to change it on the 400.

I'm thinking of trying to cut a nail tick with a Dremel, anyone ever try this?

Dremel? Yeah, it's been done.

It's kinda weird really. I have a feeling they just can't be arsed to fix this. Attention to detail and consistency is why companies like Victorinox have such good rep and prosper. Gerber, gosh dangit, it's such an easy fix for a problem that's been there for many years!

It's the same blade that's on the 600. I guess they are too cheap to stamp blades for the 400.

... MP400. ... the knife blade. The handle has a notch, but the nail tick on the blade is on the inboard side (opposite the handle notch).... Seems to me like the blade should be located so the nail tick lines up with the notch on the handle.

You can make your own nail nick using a Dremel rotary tool as I show in this thread:

Even easier is to move the blade to the other handle.  MP's are easy to open up and shift around parts.  Hell, I managed it for my MP425 mod, so anyone with even a small amount of ability would find it simple....... :)
