S557 Can Opener Question
on: January 07, 2016, 11:35:30 PM
Of all the sellers on Ebay barely anyone has ACTUAL photos of a s557. Can someone help me? Does this tool have the wenger can opener (that is just an opener) or the vic can opener (that has the small driver at the tip). I am seriously considering one, but I keep seeing mixed photos. Thank in advance

If it's a Wenger,it'll be a Wenger opener,but if it's the new Delemont,it'll be a Vic opener
There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

Hi Demel

Depends on whether you get a Wenger version (hooked Wenger CO) or the Vic Delemont version (Vic CO with SD in tip)
Most sellers of new SAKs will have the Vic version now

Best way to tell is check the shield - If the Square Wenger cross logo you have a Wenger,
If a Vic shield - You have a Vic

Also are the 557 pliers as good as the vic pliers despite being slip joint? That is my only other hesitation.

I'd have thought they might be a wee bit better. You can open the pivot to a second position to grab wider objects

Seems legit. I'll be picking one up soon. I only wish it had a small blade instead of a nail file. With one a signature it seems out of place on a larger tool

I'm quite eager to hear how it performs once you've brought it to its paces.

Wishing the local stores here would stock up with something along the lines of a Vic Evolution S52 and/or S557 (S54 looks like a little overkill) so I could get to try out those slip joint pliers.

If seller har real pictures of tool he is selling, you could tell by the logo wich opener it has. Sometimes they use adverticing pictures of Vic and Wenger, and you migt get either one.

As for pliers. They are much thinner than Vic ones, and not so comfortable to use. Taking something like bolt out the head and twisting makes pliers give in a bit. But slipjoint is a nice feature nevertheless.

Victorinox Delemont EvoGrip S557:

I think it is nail file.

Look in the web of Victorinox

That to me is a big downfall with Wenger.  I love, and use the small blade on my Vics a ton!  Have never needed to use a nail file though.  :-\

I am a fan of the nailfile - well, more the nail cleaner and shape of the tool. It's got an excellent shape to clear gunk out of nails that I cannot get with other tools (I've experimented a bit with the awl...). The tool shape suits situations where you want to avoid cutting - for example, it worked removing scales from a Dual Pro X. I wish a number of 91mm Vic's had it instead of the small blade (eg. explorer).

The Wenger pliers are a magnificent design (slipjoint; no spring) but I find them less capable than the Victorinox under pressure. Ultimately I would like the strength of the Vic in the Wenger springless design. That given, there's no substitute for the SwissTool when considering serious plier work.

The S557 is one of my favourite saks. Carried it today, by coincidence. It's fantastic; you should enjoy it :)

The nail file is an excellent phillips screwdriver for little ones too, like in the glasses...!
