Multitool rescue tool
on: March 08, 2016, 10:06:19 PM
I've got a Victorinox rescue tool that I really like but it has very few tools. Does anyone know of a large multitool like the Leatherman Surge or Supertool 300 that includes a glass breaker? A seatbelt cutter would be an added bonus.

Victorinox Swiss Tool R.  The R stands for rescue and it has the same curved blade as your rescue tool.

Not plier base but the LM Raptor.  There was a repot of one having issues.

The new Skeletool RX will come with a glass breaker bit. I guess at some point these bits will be sold separately and can be used in a wave/charge/surge as well.

The Leatherman OHT has a seatbelt cutter/flathead, and other assorted bits that I guarantee would pop some glass if need be.

Damn thing is like a brick anyways so if all else fails, I suggest just throwing it at the intended glass/target.

I think you underestimate car windows. You need the hard point of impact to start shattering them.

Its hard to find a decent multitool that also has a dedicated glas breaker. From the inside car windows are pretty weak but from the outside they are very hard to break.

I don't know if you are a firemen or police officer but if it is just for your own safety i would advise a dedicated seatbelt cutter and glas breaker. I dont think a tool that first has to be fiddled out of your pocket and deployed will ever be as effective as a dedicated cutter/breaker.

And it allows you to carry a decent multitool like swisstool x for every day carry use. Most people don't like to have an serrated blade on the knife/multitool for every day use.

Also a rescue tool should be accessible. If you can't carry one with you all the time the best alternative is to get an inexpensive dedicated tool like the Z-Rex and tape it under the seat within reach.

I'm a fleet owner and former driver. I've never been first on an incident but one of my teams has been and was written about in Reader's Digest for rescuing another driver. I have the "subtle" red and yellow belt pouch that holds my Victorinox Rescuetool. I carry a Benchmade I got and a Victorinox Cybertool my best half gave me but have the desire to have a really good large tool like a Supertool or Surge or similar from another quality maker.

Agreed.  No doubt they're built to withstand impacts.  You need to puncture the glass in a corner at a weak spot, hence making a mini-sledge, or hammer to the middle of a window largely ineffective.  If your not looking to improvise, a dedicated rescue tool would be a good choice as mentioned above.  Benchmade has some outstanding rescue hooks, Leatherman as well.  My Raptors get used daily and it has both of what you mentioned you needed.  Pricey, but well worth it, the ring cutter alone has paid for the tool several times over by letting me not break fingers any worse than they already are.

Just about any multitool will work.  Use the large flat driver to score the window at the corner about an inch or so from window frame, then use the plier head to strike that spot.  Usually goes in one firm strike.

Thanks for all the suggestions. There doesn't seem to be an all in one that fits my want list so I think I'll keep carrying the Rescuetool and just add a Surge or Supertool or similar.

That should cover most contingencies.
