I like the idea of having an SAK from the year I was born.  I've picked up some other things from then just for kicks, but I don't know how to tell the date on a Swiss Army Knife.  What's the trick to it?  For example, I inherited this little guy from my uncle about 25 years ago and I don't know how long he owned it.  It is only 2 and 1/4 inches long and appears to be a Classic,  but that's all I know.  How could I determine when it was made?
Thanks.

Until you get a better answer, you can take a look here:  http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Classic

Thanks. I think my little blue Vic is actually a Bijou made from 1980 to 1987 differentiated from the Classic by not having the key ring.  Still need to know how to tell the precise year on other models.  There's got to be a way to figure that out since we can get a merit badge for having a SAK from our birth year.

The Soldier models have the year of contract stamped on the tang...makes it easy to determine the year.

I see nail cleaner tip with textured surface (early ones are crosscut files). Screw or rivet scissors? Aluminum headed tweezers? I don't know the dates, but you can probably only determine when those features were discontinued.

...and format of the tang stamp

Aluminum tipped tweezers were used from the early 60s (1962/63) until the late 70s (1978ish). Before that they used nickel-silver tipped tweezers. After, plastic tipped.
Found this in an old post

Thanks for the replies. I don't use that knife very much, if at all.  I only carry it when I want to feel closer to my uncle.  I was very fond of him.  If anyone has a 1966 dated knife they want to part with I'm looking for one.

Try using this:

http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,51872.msg1214377.html#new

It is primarily for 91mm SAKs
But the dates for tools and features were very similar across the sizes..

So as mentioned above - Aluminium topped tweezers would put it after 1957
It looks like the old single leaf spring (missing) style scissors - so that is pre 1975.

This blog is also brilliant:
