That looks good Kampfer. Is that the ppp? What tool is that next to the awl and bottle opener?
It was a can opener but now is a flathead
Nice :tu: I see it now.

.... to be honest, I'm unsure as to what you are classifying as an urban tool,

Clearly, an Urban EDC Tool 8) is a multitool raised in the inner city. Or a multitool you carry at a breakdance competition or rap battle?

They have implements for adjust pant-sag and for flattening the bill of your ball-cap. Also, an OHO crack spoon. Very handy...

:tu: Best thing to do with them - they're pretty feeble can openers but make a nice small flat driver.

A lot of people have the same complain about the SOG can-openers, but I have never had a problem with them. Yeah, it's a jagged opening but it works just a well as Leatherman's and Gerber's openers.

I had nightmarish can't opening experience with SP2.0, which use standard SOG opener.
The grind is on the wrong side, very bull, it chewed up and disfigure the can instead of slicing the top off.
I have a pic here somewhere showing that.

The comparison between SAK and pliers base MT goes on, if you don't need pliers, go with SAK, or if you need pliers, SAK is out.

Pretty much what Al decided.  The test is a Deluxe Tinker vs. a Juice CS4

+1  JerseyDevil...thanks for sharing a great review and thread!   :tu:

Even small keychain pliers based MT like Squirt has stronger pliers than the 91mm pliers.

Agreed, Kampfer.  I carry a Cadet or 84/91mm Golfer during the workweek, but have a Squirt PS4 in my backpack on a work-related keychain daily.  It's a combo that takes care of most situations.  The Gerber BG mini-tool or Gerber Clutch also work for me in this combination, though the PS4 is the lightest of the three.

Might sound silly but... Leatherman PST?

Not silly at all Lynn!

While I have an early PST (actually two), I never liked the feel of them while using them...a PST is quite uncomfortable when you really grip it using the pliers.  But I found the Juice S2 and found it to be a great companion, comfortable tool with an SAK in my pocket.  I put the Juice on my belt and it's pliers compliment the SAK I'm carrying...when carrying the Juice, I can combine it with a Spartan Lite, a Super Tinker, a Cadet or Pioneer, or one of my Golfer/Compact mods for a good urban combination.

When I'm out in the country, I typically pair one of the above SAKs in my pocket and with a Gerber Strata on my belt.  I know that I'm covered for almost all situations when hiking, working on the cabin, or just enjoying being outside.

For pocket carry SAKs, I find that for me, a 2- or 3-layer SAK is the most comfortable.  Something like the Deluxe Tinker or an Explorer aren't comfortable.  I have both, but never carry the DT.  I have belt sheaths for both and carry the Explorer on occasion, but usually in combination with the S2 or Strata.

I'd put forth the Explorer Plus, to go alongside the Deluxe Tinker. The inline Phillips is loads more useful than the T-Phillips. The magnifier comes in handy more often than one would think too. I hardly ever find myself needing pliers in an urban situation, so if I were going to settle for a T-Phillips, I'd probably go Super Tinker instead, for a much thinner pocket carry.

Then of course the micro screwdriver, pen, and pin are icing on the cake.

As much as I love the MP400, it is rotten for urban carry because of the pointy plier head that protrudes from the body of the tool. (= no good for pocket carry)

I have the PPP, and it is brilliant too, but instead of having the pointy pliers head sticking out, it has the exposed gears, which are even WORSE. (because they cannot be ground down like the MP400's pliers head.

What I've been doing for my own urban carry is kind of rotate through my favorite small SAKs for pocket carry: Manager, Explorer, Classic, Sportsman, Mountaineer, Evo 14; then carry the Leatherman Charge ALX with bits and extension in my courier bag that accompanies me to work each day. I commute by bicycle whenever I can, and having the Charge w/bits gives me peace of mind that I can fix minor things on the bike that I wouldn't have a chance at with something like a Classic.

On weekends, I carry a bit more tool on my person (Explorer Plus, Mountaineer, or Spirit) and skip the courier bag.

I was going back and forth and I know the explorer gets a lot of love on this forum, so the deluxe tinker was what I went with. Also those sak pliers do come in handy. It would suck to be caught in a situation with a fat sak and needing something to grab with. but like I said you can put almost any 91mm sak in that spot and it would be just as good.

I disagree about the 400, I carried it in my coin pocket earlier this week and barely noticed it was there. Also it has such a basic tool set that if you gifted it to someone they can find uses for almost all the tools.

I've been thinking about the ppp. I'll have to get one eventually.

Nice rotation you got there  don't you love having options

Whenever I carry my MP426, it is pocket carried, pliers uppermost down the outside seam of the pocket. There's usually enough other crap in there like wallet or tobacco tin to keep it upright. I never have any issues with the plier tips digging

A mod. It's an MP400 with the blade replaced with the file from an MP450.  Very easy and useful mod, I carry mine all the time.  I believe Al's is based on a corkscrew MP400.  I call mine an MP425.

You should add Mauser M712 to the list, a wonderful urban tool.

If you like the Schnellfeuer,  see if you can pick up a copy of Gavin Lyall's classic thriller, "Midnight Plus One". Won the British Mystery Writers Silver Dagger award back in the 1960s. The Schnellfeuer's finest hour.
