Need Advice - Learn to Custom a SAK
on: February 01, 2016, 04:13:03 AM
Hello all, I want to add pliers and phillips screwdriver + magnifier glass to my Compact. The donor SAK will be an old Champion (around 1985) and a busted Handyman (from 1990's).

The question is, since the Compact is 2 layers SAK and will become 4 layers, sure it will need a longer pin, can I use the brass pin from the old Handyman? Is it the same size in diameter with brass pin from the Compact?

Thanx in advance to all Knights here

The pins from the Handyman will work just fine for what you want to do with tie Compact.

Also, make sure to check this thread out. it tells you all the little things you need for modding 91mm SAKS

And just so you know for next time, the Mod Squad subforum would be a better place for this.

Good luck with your Mod! :tu:

Hi sLaughterMed, thank you so much for your advice and the link. I'm sure the guidance there will be very useful for me. Now I only need time, tools and more courage to do the mod  :dd: because it will be the first for me.

Be careful with the pins - the Handyman isn't a lot wider than the Yeoman Mechanic you're going to build (26.7mm vs 23.5mm according to SAKWiki).  It's easy to drill too deep and/or damage the ends of the pins as you remove them and then you might not have enough material left for the mod.

Take it steady, take lots of photos (for reference as much as for us :D) and let us know how you get on. :tu:

Thanx a lot for reminding me about the thickness of those two SAKs Hiraethus. I will be very careful when I'm doing the mod. Unfortunately, my office just sent me somewhere far from home. I will post an update in this thread when I have free time to make the Yeoman Mechanic.

If the other donor knife is a Champion, why can't you use the pins from that?

Oh I'm sorry. I forgot to mention that the Champion is no longer a Champion when the scissors broke. Someone borrow it and use the scissors to pry something  And I ask my friend to remove the broken scissors, so the thickness already reduced.
