Damascus 2016 Limited Edition
on: February 14, 2016, 12:35:37 AM
There's a pic in all the groups on Facebook with the new Damacus 2016 edition. It's a Pioneer X in Greyish. The 2016 Alox are Purple! They presentated it today in Frankuft at the Ambiente.

How about the Pioneer with scissors and the damascus with scissors?

Purple is a shame for the 2nd color. Didnt see it named much in the threads requesting color ideas. And while the damascus looks great, it's too bad because they will only make about 5,000 probably and most of us wont get one due to quantity.

And following victorinox pricing policy of the past few years it will probably cost €500

I have a feeling quite a lot of people will buy extras of the Pioneer X as damascus editions have proven to be a very lucrative investment for future resale :)

I am not excited about the purple as there have recently been a couple editions in this color in my favorite alox size, but I am very happy to see that Victorinox will follow up with their yearly edition decision

Honestly? Who would use a Damascus sak? Especially a fancy-coloured/rough-wood Damascus sak... They were pretty much made to be shelfqueens...

The past few limited editions did not go up in value by that much, and were available for less than their original price in many cases. I got a few, from eBay, for a lot less than what they were selling at the dealers. The only ones that have shot up in price were the Damascus pioneers. I wonder if the new ones will follow the trend of the old Damascus pioneers, or, the trend of the last few limited editions..

There has to be a 'sweet point' in purchasing time. I held out on the 2015 RangerWood Damascus and it ended up being A$100-A$200 less than the original release prices when I got it two months ago. I will probably pick up a 2016, but will sit back and wait for everything to calm down first.

At the other end, it seems most 2010/2011/2012 models are hard to get at a reasonable price now. I have more or less given up on the 2010 and 2011. Wondering if the 2013 will soon be harder to acquire as well.

A Canadian seller on ebay; all up with postage was between A$400-A$450. Could not get under A$500 until it appeared. Seems to be selling them still; slightly higher than when I picked them up:

I have a friend who carries and uses a Damascus wooden Explorer from 2013.

I dont think the Damascus knives are intended for use.

The Victorinox Damascus blades are SS so using them should be as carefree as using a regular SS blade. They are also harder that the regular Victorinox SS blades.

However, there is the possibility that after sharpening and using them the Damascus pattern will not be so nice looking (you need a special process to achieve it again).

I have a few and have no desire to use them.

I dont think the Damascus knives are intended for use.

I had a conversation with a Victorinox Executive at a private event at the London store last year and he mentioned that the Damascus knives were indeed sold as collectors pieces and were not aimed at everyday users.

Personally I don't need to carry a Damascus blade as my "normal" blades do the job just fine.

Are you sure it's SS Damascus? I always thought it's a mix of 15N20 and 1095HC or some other Sandvik Carbon-ish stuff

Still a little too rich for my blood.... for now.
Was also hoping a bit closer to Sydney.
I did pick up a 2014 locally new in box for about A$130 off original price
