" Why so many knives " ?
on: February 20, 2016, 02:27:06 PM
We had company over the other night and before leaving the woman was staring strangely at my computer desk which is home to my large knife collection and said with a funny tone " Why do you have so many knives ? " I personally would never ask such a silly question , the only answer I could come up with quickly was " Because I like them " . Mean while you should have seen the look on my wife's face , Not sure if they will be coming back

I think that was a fine answer.  It was better than saying, "Hey Oinker, why do you like food so much?"

Your answer was probably (a lot) better than any of my suggestions below:

“Because I can.”

“When the New World Order takes over in their black helicopters, the only hard currency in the free badlands will be guns, ammo, canned goods, and knives.”

“To figure out my permanent EDC.”

“Oh, you're interested? Cool! Most people just back away! I have a beauty here, let me tell you everything about this 2008 limited edition and how it is different from the 2007, the history behind it, and why the...”

Choice depends on mood and whether you ever want to see the person again. I usually just smile and comment something about knives being more useful than stamps. :)

I think you should have gone with:  (awkward silence)  "... You just couldn't let it pass could you ... " (walks over to the knives and picks up the biggest one there ... )

It's funny because afterwards my wife said to me " I never noticed how many knives you actually DO own "until she said something. She laughed  :)

Yesterday I bought this display shelf for a few of my blades. Put it up, then the wife asked why I still had so many knives, I told her I don't, I only have 20something, last time she asked I had about 60.

And a few have "migrated" to my desk drawer at work. They need to come home now.

Moreso than guns, a lot of knives is scary to a lot of people.  That has always bothered me, and saying "I like knives" tends to get a very negative reaction from the general public.

When I was growing up I had an interest in knives.  My father had a few good ones but they were all for some purpose or another and he was never a collector.

The only knife collector I had ever heard of was a very horrible story that made me ashamed to be interested in knife collecting.  There was this very famous wrongful conviction story about a guy named Donald Marshall, who was accused (and convicted) of a murder he didn't commit.  He went to prison as a result, and it wasn't until years later that it was discovered that the real killer was a local knife collector.  In the collector's defense, he was defending himself in an attempted mugging, but the parallel between knife collectors and killers was quickly established.  The fact that this guy never came forward and let someone else take the blame for it doesn't help any either.

I hid my interest in knives for many years because of this.  I still don't flaunt my collection (except here, amongst more or less well adjusted and like minded people!  :P) but somehow the word still gets out- "this is Grant, he likes knives" or "Oh, you have a question about knives then you need to talk to Grant" or "how did I know YOU of all people would have a knife on you?"

For the most part it is a positive response, but I will admit that in the back of my mind some part of me still cringes at that.
