Looking for Multi Tool Designer
on: April 22, 2016, 02:02:35 PM
Hi there!

I'm trying to find somebody who has experience in designing a multi tool. Im looking to design a basic multi tool with all the basic components we use for the tools in our industry. These are all simple established tool like screw drivers, files, alan keys , Pliers etc. But we just want the specific sizes etc to cut down on weight and space when flying etc. Ive approached a few industrial design companies who are putting together proposals to get funding but none of them have really designed anything remotely similar to a functioning multi tool. If anyone could point me in the right direction or suggest somebody they would recommend I would really appreciate it.

Kindest regards

H Mclauchlan

There are a number of professional designers that lurk here and a number of hobbyists that I'm sure would be able to help you. It shouldn't be too difficult to find a reasonable solution for you.

One suggestion I have off the top of my head is something similar to a SOG PowerLock, PowerPlier or Paratool, which might make it a bit easier for you since you would only have to design the various implements you want, and you get an excellent pair of pliers provided.

Assuming of course that you want pliers to begin with!

Wow, that sounds interesting I would love to join that project (but sorry, I'm in IT).
It is a bit difficult to advice with so little information (How many tools will you produce, what is the tool load, what tool size are you aiming for). However, between all the copyrights and know-how involved in such a Project I would like to suggest two alternative routes.

1) Customizing an Existing Tool
Instead of creating a whole new tool, just create the missing part to fit the chosen frame. Between 3D printing and using an existing tool design this should be fairly simple. E.g. I'm working on a utility-blade holder for an LM Wave/Charge.
As not all tools are as easy to mod, I would suggest to have a look at the Gerber MP-400 frame and the SOG PPP.

2) Factory Custom
Basically, the same as above but contact the manufacturer and ask if they would do your custom.

And welcome to the forum
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

Just to build on Etheralicier, SOG has actually done several "factory custom runs" for other companies, namely Paladin and West Marine, as well as some rebranding of their normal tools for Harley Davidson and Stanley. Look up the  Paladin PT-510, PT-525, and PT540, and the West Marine Sailing Tool and Blacktip.
