Question on SAK Adventurer
on: April 17, 2016, 07:37:31 PM
I've been looking for a SAK Adventurer but it doen't seem to be a current model.  Does anyone know when the Adventurer was dropped by Victorinox?  The SAK wiki doesn't show it as discontinued.

(I know they're still available from a few locations.  I'm just trying to find out when Vic stopped making them.)

Thx

It's on page 68 of the 2015 Vic catalog. It seems to be still in production.

Thanks, Marduk.   :salute:

Sure enuf, it's there.  Don't I feel stupid.   :twak:

In looking around at the major SAK dealers websites, I didn't find the Adventurer although I didn't do a comprehensive search.

Hi

Could not find the Adventurer in 2016 catalogue.

Here is a screenshot from the same 2016 PDF for a different product(belt pouch) , Adventurer is listed as a "discontinued style".  ???

Not necessarily comparing like with like - it was in the 2015 European catalogue but not in the 2016 North America one.  That might mean it's discontinued or it might mean the North American importer is not carrying it.  That page also indicates that the Rucksack and Picknicker are discontinued, but I think they are still available in Europe.

Adventurer I believe was phases out with a bunch of slide locks.  It's actually my favorite model.  It's kinda been replaced with the Centurion, same tool set, but with liner locks.

Cheers

Looks like you can still get them from Amazon in the UK

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Victorinox-0895300-Army-Knife-Adventurer/dp/B0001P14QI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1461481402&sr=8-1&keywords=victorinox+adventurer

May need to get one if they are becoming hard to find.

Thanks for all the replies everyone.

The mystery gets bigger.  Found the Adventurer available from an internet vendor for a very good price.  The photo in the vendor's ad shows a plain edge.  Ordered a couple of them and the ones I received have serrated blades but the same model number (53601) as the plain edge.  I haven't seen anything that indicates the Adventurer even comes with a serrated edge (except for a Boy Scout version per the SAK Wiki).  I'll be returning the ones I received as I don't care for serrated SAKs.

I also looked at the Picknicker (same as the Adventurer except has a corkscrew in place of the phillips screwdriver).  The Picknicker is shown as having a serrated blade but several reviewers said they received Picknickers with plain edge blades.

I'm going to call Swiss Army in Connecticut and see if they can sort this out.  I'll let you know what I learn.

Cheers

P.S.--I know the Centurion is the same tool set as the Adventurer but I prefer the side lock of the Adventurer.

I spoke with Swiss Army in Connecticut and they couldn't explain why Adventurers are showing up with serrated edges.  There is a Boy Scout version that has a serrated edge but they advised that it would have the Boy Scout emblem on the scale.  They said the non-Boy Scout Adventurer should only come with a plain edge.

My first thought was that maybe the serrated Adventurers are counterfeit but they appear to be the normal Victorinox high quality.  So, the mystery remains.

I really hate to see Vic phasing out the side lock 111mm knives as I prefer that lock to the liner lock.   :(

The Picnicker (Picknicker? I've seen it both ways) has both options, so does the Rucksack. I happened to get the wavy Picnicker and the straight Rucksack. If some wavy blades made it on the non-BSA Adventurer, that doesn't seem too unbelievable to me.

As usual, when sellers use stock photos from Victorinox, you can't quite be 100% sure what you're getting. I've been bitten by it before.

Agreed, but for me it's mostly because the slide lock knives have so many more tools on them (scissors, pliers, inline Phillips, and file — OK, technically that's on the OH Master RT but good luck finding it). Maybe they're going to start expanding the liner lock options a little more? I think there was some speculation of that, because of the placement of the nail nick on the new Pioneer X. Of course, there's the Ranger models too now, they're lacking for the same things.
May it be as the Pattern has chosen.

I can understand that as well but what I don't understand is why Swiss Army USA is unaware of it and says it shouldn't be that way.  Also, the model number (53601) is the same for both plain and serrated with nothing to distinguish between the two.
