Which tool for the car?

I carry a basic tool kit, some zip ties in my car and a Crunch and a Vic Soldier or LM Crater C33t are always on or near me. I don't carry nothing fancy with me these days.

I carry quite a few tools in my car. Off the top of my head I could not list everything, but here is a few.


- full socket set  (Very important)
- another smaller socket set
- handful of different screwdrivers
- diagonal cutter
- a few different wrenches
- scissors
- breaker bar  (very important)
- file
- ST300
- duct tape
- electrical tape
- zip ties
- rivet clips
- flashlight
- headlamp
- medical gloves
- first aid kit


This is just a very small list of things I keep in my car. I also have more in that bag as well as a fully packed backpack with a full change of clothes, paper towels, gloves, hat, blanket, and some other stuff I cannot remember. I also have a "roadside" kit with jumper cables and all sorts of ropes and things like that.

I really should get something for my car, it's old enough that I can actually read the digital error messages without any diagnostics equipment and certainly old enough that it could use some tightening up once in a while. Then again if I added a multitool and had it filled it with fuel at the same time those things would be worth around half of what I gave for the car (with European multitool prices and the equivalent of 6 USD/Gal).

I thought about the Swisstool, but since I EDC the Spirit I will have much tool doubles. That's why I thought of the Surge, best of both words, I will carry the lightest and the car will carry the heaviest. This wins so far.
About the torch, I liked the Citroen Picasso idea of a built in rechargable torch that doubles as a trunk light, very handy.

Agreed, good idea. However, the one I saw in a approximately 8 years old Picasso was fairly dim, dimmer than the car ceiling's light  Not much use for that much light unless in absolute darkness (and still!) .

In my truck, I carry a folding shovel, a becker bk4, a firestarter, a bat flashlight, a headlamp(if i could find the dang thing), a tarp, ratchet straps, instant coffee (a necessity to life), a buck one handed multitool and a few first aid items. I never get in my truck without my leatherman ST300 (with bits), my leatherman OHT (for rescue only), whatever I have on my person (a knife, flashlight, mt, and weapon of some sort), and my O-light S2. I dont like leaving that stuff in the truck.. Just preference.. I also normally have a small set of tools in there but right now they are parked at the girlfriends house because I have been working on a lot of stuff. Right now my back seat is a mess but its really not bad once you organize it all.

 At the moment I also have an Estwing hammer, my good old Soviet hatchet/shovel and a Bahco Scandi knife. Also a Flashlight of various functions that works on batteries or 12V from the car.

I have a basic tool kit (with flashlight) and first aid kit in the back, but keep a Wave in the dash for quick access. Lately, I've been toying with carrying a Fenix PD32 in the dash, but I can't seem to find confirmation that rechargeable lithium with built in protection won't get damaged by a few severely cold Michigan nights. Our weather pushes their temperature rating.

Meanwhile, this summer, got my teenage son a car. He now has a Climber in the dash, and a small tool kit with flashlight and small first aid kit in the back. I could tell he was proud to have the tools.

How many people out there driving around have trunks without any emergency gear in it? Makes no sense to me.

That's nice for those who understand a lot about car's engines, suspensions and such. I have a long term contract with a road emergency company and I haven't changed a tire since many years ago, when I had a Renault Clio and fewer money.
As emergencies I regard other things than mechanical failures. Being too cold in the mountain (I need a blanket, such as the one Firiki was searching about), a sudden rain or snow  (the later is rare so I kept chains in the garage, but now with the crossover that should change), a flood (we have those here, I bought a tall car with that in mind), medical emergencies (the need to stop bleeding is the most pronounced, bandages and a belt help here, the rest is medical knowledge), and such.
I also need binoculars for a rare bird sight, microscope to enjoy sands, some knife and a small toolkit, some candy, my sunglasses etc. I EDC all of that in my EDC bags. They come handy in the car also. My left front door in the 13 year old Hyundai Matrix was loose and the Spirit took care of that, tightening the single nut that was holding the mechanism. I might tighten a screw in my telescopes or mounts and I have Allen and Torx bits for that. I might need to clear vegetation, I can do that. I have light. I have fire.
Nature is not that wild in Greece and most of Europe, as it is in Canada, US, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and many other places on Earth. It is inhabited for thousands of years and densely. But I understand that an American might get caught in the desert or a huge natural park, or a blizzard, a tornado, a hurricane, a tsounami, a flood, a volcano erruption in Alaska or Yellowstone, or even an unfriendly kind of ghetto with high criminality. It's so different. Fires we share and some  people burned in their cars a few years ago but the only thing you can do is escape quickly in such a situation.

In mine I have the usual jack, wheel brace and tow eye that comes with the car. On top of that I have a Leatherman Surge, Gerber MP400, an led torch with magnetic base, a head torch, a tow strap, jump leads, duct tape, surgical gloves, leather gloves, dashboard wipes, baby wipes, wd40, spray version of copper grease, small socket set, test meter, insulated screwdrivers, big pliers, 2 umbrellas, blanket, 2 trekking poles ( i need a walking stick all the time so its a backup), electrical tape, dogs travel bowl, about 500 dog poo bags, 2 spare dog leads, refuse bags, compressor tyre inflator, AA card, charge leads for phones, disable badge with time clock, and a purple fluffy pencil case with my parking costa coffee change in it

My wife insists to not fill it up to the ceiling, "as I did whith the previous car".
But I couldn't help it. I broke and added a Swisschamp in the armrest space.

Are these wet wipes? If yes...I wouldnt take them into my car. In winter times they can be a pain in the butt. Literally.
Regarding all the tools I am asking myself what kind of repairs are you exspecting to do when on the road?

With the new cars there is not much you can repair yourself. With this stuff I can get myself through the rare break downs here in central europe. No need to carry a full camping kit for me.
