So this happened today.. My wheel fell off.
on: June 05, 2016, 04:42:16 AM
Drove 316 miles just fine doing almost 70mph, i get 2 miles away from home and a shotgun goes off behind me as the truck falls

No idea why, i guess the lug nuts loosened, I let the guys at work borrow my truck while i was in Portland and they rolled 200k miles. This is my second day driving the truck and this happens....

Thankfully noone was hurt other than my wallet. The tire kept rolling about another 50 yards at 25mph, weighs about 60lbs, easily could have been worse.

Hell that is awful!  Time for a new rotor eh?  I had this happen to me some 16 or 17 years ago.  Except my drum landed on the inner portion of the rim not the ground, so it didn't fall all the way down, plus I was only going about 20 mph when it happened.

Something similar happened to my father years ago.  He was driving our old F 150 and hauling a 30 foot camping trailer.  He stopped every 30 miles or so, swearing at the trailer because it was all over the road.  Couldn't be the truk of course as it had just been serviced before we left.

Every time he stopped he was getting madder and madder, inspecting the trailer tires, lug nuts and even pulling the wheels off it to check the bearings and everything checked out.

After this happened several times he decides to look at the truck.... and sure enough that was the problem.  The guys that serviced it hadn't tightened the lug nuts and the lugs had sheared almost all the way around the hub.  If he'd gone much further he'd have lost the wheel.

Of course, none of that was visible because of the plastic hub cap.  That's one of many reasons I never buy a car with hub caps.

Glad to hear you are ok!

Those flying tires cause a hell of a lot of damage.  You are not only lucky you came out ok, but also that it didn't hit anyone else.  Modern economy cars are so flimsy that tire would have cut one in half and gotten wedged in the car behind them.

But I'm sure you have heard the horror stories from a hundred people already!

When my wife was in college(before we met) she parked her truck at a florist across from her classroom.  A truck hauling a trailer came past and one of the wheels on the passenger side broke free and went careening into my wife's driver door, cratering it.  Since she only had liability insurance, and the negligent driver had full coverage(both through farmers insurance!) the insurance company provided him a lawyer and not her.  The judge ruled in favor of the driver of the negligent driver citing the fact that "She was parked in violation since she wasn't patronizing the florist".  So that's what farmers insurance will do for you folks.

Yeah I got super lucky, that road in particular has 6 boat ramps on it. Roads like that in Florida on a Saturday are usually busier than any freeway or highway.

Also found out my hitch was bent earlier that day. (Notice the angle of the bend before the ball)

Had a few mechanics come look at it today, all of them stumped. They did agree that having the trailer on helped catch some of the fall, Would have been a lot more damage had the foot not skid down the road.

The truck is an 02 Diesel with the GM Heavy Duty, 4x4 and Snow Plow package. (Kinda ironic it resides in florida)

I wish :D the only issue with the new ones is Emissions, Its hard to find a truck that hasn't had emmision recalls on the EGR or DPF systems.

Not to mention the ~60k price tag!

But they sure are pretty!!!!

The gas models, like the one my father and grandfather have, don't have any recalls as of now. But with the VW scandal I'm sure most Diesel truck companies are probably reconsidering their emissions systems. As for the gas trucks, we absolutely love ours. They can pull a ~20 foot trailer with a large bobcat skid loader with no problems. The price is a bit hard to swallow, though.

True.

According to most of the mine workers at the GM Plant I've read of, state that the new trucks are all about emmisions with less regard to hp/torque.

As for gassers, ive been pulling the trailer with my parents tahoe, absolutely terrible. I had a 6.0 2500 before this truck and it could pull for sure, at 8 mpg lol

But loaded at 6800 I feel very confident passing and more importantly stopping

I miss the Turbo and Tranny brake more than the torque!!

Happened to a friend of mine in radio, he was driving the brand new station van back from a remote broadcast, and while he was stopped at an intersection a tractor trailer wheel came bounding across and went straight through the windscreen... It totalled the van. No one was hurt but somehow his boss had it in for him and he lost his job for something that was not his fault.
The difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a little longer.

Somehow, I'm reminded of this: Wait for it... :)

I'm glad no-one was hurt and that there was little damage.

Yeah, the older trucks absolutely sucked for gas mileage. We sold our 2010 Chevy Silverado 1500 recently, and that only pulled about 11 all the time. Our new trucks pull around 18-20 with or without a trailer!
