Wow, this one was only 4 pages when I went to bed!

I have one of those lock de-icer/light keychain things (the grey/black one that was first posted) and I'll tell you it might work for the light frost found in California or something but it won't do much in a real winter.  Not unless you have lots of batteries and time to kill!

Def,

The last one of the bunch posted looks like it might be more industrial with the sleeve covering the heating element.  It might be worth a try.  I'm afraid the torch could damage paint.

As far as the pages go, we did get a little carried away.

It's a forum- you are supposed to post!  I have no complaints about that at all!

Most of the locks that experience freezing up (in my experience anyway) are the heavy deadbolt types that stick out from a door.  These types can be heated quickly and easily with a torch, and the ones on a car are easiest to get unstuck by heating the key and inserting it.

I came across a pretty basic multitool today while digging through bits and peices of tools at work looking for something...it's bases on a fold out hex key set, but instead of hex keys, there's two Phillips head drivers, two flat drivers, and a pointed peice (is there a technical term for those?)

I shot it with some WD-40 to loosen it up a bit..I'll see if I can snap a pic tomorrow.

Hi,

For those looking for a pen-type multi like the one Tom described in Reply #65 inthis thread, take a look at Duluth Trading.  They have one for less than $20.

lonediver,

I've seen all of those & they're mostly no use.  The last time I used an Allen wrench on a guitar was probably 5 years ago.  Thanks for looking though.

Not a fan of locking nuts or Floyd Rose?

I always preferred the classic styling and function of a Bigsby for the rare occasions I felt I wanted to quickly de-tune my guitar.  Nowadays I stick to Gibson style stop tailpieces...

I have a Wilkerson on my Strat, but I've never wanted a locking nut.  All I use an Allen wrench for is to adjust intonation or neck warp.  I've haven't had real problems with either of those for quite a while.  I humidify my office & don't travel to humid places very often.

I picked up this Coast Fishing Multi-Toolbox at Walmart this morning for $6.97.  I've seen similar ones before, but this is different in having a marlinspike, hookpuller, and diamond file with a hook groove.  I couldn't find this specific model on Coast's website or anywhere else(FT3901CP).  The package says it's made of 440C,  ??? I dunno.  I think it's ok for the price and it'll find a spot in my tacklebox.

I've been looking for something like that to test out- let me know if you are near Wal Mart again sometime soon and I'll cover the cost plus shipping.

I always see marlin spikes on old fishing tools and knives (and new ones in this case)...what is it used for?  Just a handy spike to have like a long awl?

Marlinspikes are invaluable for untying wet knots in ropes.  You work the spike into the knot & loosen it enough to untie it.  They can also be used to aid in tying & working difficult knots.

I don't use it much unless we're out in the canoe or camping.  In the summer it's fun to teach the kids how to lash branches together to make a fort in the mountains.

I use to sail competitively, & a good knowledge of knots helped quite often.  I could have used a good marlinspike on some of the wet knots I use to encounter then.

I did hazmat education a few summers working oil booms in the river & down at the lake.  We had a lot of wet rope then too.

Here's a type I don't own but really like.

That looks like an interesting take on the Frosch tool.

Lonediver told me about this one. It's an Alltrade brand reversable plier tool, with folding blades and screwdrivers. (Made in China)
The plier heads are fairly decent quality, with good fit and finish.   :)

But the folding blades are of stunningly bad quality.  :(

It's actually a fairly good idea. Not as a carry tool (it's too big for that) but it would have been a handy item to have in the car for emergencies.

Too bad the blades and screwdrivers are so crude.
