Black oxide, red oxide?
on: August 23, 2017, 03:43:08 PM
Hey, I recently receive 2 new black oxide tools. One is a charge alx, the other is a black wave. The strange thing is that some parts of the black oxide are turning reddish brown. Copper like colour.  It's not rust, cos it can't be wiped off. Could it be the oxidation process was not done properly? Anyone had this experience?

The wave was a new one. Cos it came directly from leatherman from the warranty program.

Try putting oil on one of the tools and then wipe the excess off, see if that stops it.  I have had this happen with one of my original Supertools in BO but other than that I have never seen it and also don't really know what it is  Unless it is a bit of rust mixing with the BO

Hopefully oiling it will help take care of the problem

Coincidentally, both came to me at about the same time. It's the first time I have encountered it. I have handled alot of leatherman..and I really mean alot... Wiping with oil doesn't remove the red. It just further wear down the coating..

Those parts of the tool have a different texture to them.  Maybe a different metal too?  Could effect how the BO takes?

Yes. Agree. They seem like softer metal.. But I never had reddish tint before. But those parts are definitely going to rub off first.

I would say (now that I see the picture) that because the parts that are reddish are aluminum that they took the BO coating differently as well as the ends of the handles as they are the different texture  but rubbing the excess off won't remove the finish as it is a form of forced rust (similar to gun blue) that is now bonded with the metal
