About coloured Micras
on: July 13, 2016, 02:45:01 PM
The colour is basically a painted shell, that fits over the handles.
This makes the tweezers fold inside the shell, instead of having them poke out of the cut-out, like in the default Micra.

Were I to remove the shell, what would the handle look?
I doubt they just add the shells to default Micras. Surely it is cheaper to leave the handles blank, and stamp the measurings on the shell.
Just curious, thanks.

When you say coloured you mean the plastic handled apparently, correct

There are painted, anodized and plastick handled Micra that have been releas3d.over the years with the reg SS version as well

I really have no idea what is under the platic handled ones though  ???

sounds like someone needs to get a beater plastic handled Micra and find out...

I suspect you will discover that the plastic isn't easy to remove though. and I'd be willing to bet the handles are not stamped, or particularly well polished underneath them.

This is my coloured Micra.
The shell is painted steel, not plastic.
I ordered my loki wrenches before this, so I got the slim wrenches, just for Rebar/Charge.

I like it, it's 06-01, and the head says Leatherman USA. I love that the tweezers are actually in a handle, instead of
sitting in the cut-out, like my new Micra.
I can't take it apart it without scratching the paint though.

I think that there is a thread on here that showed how to remove rough paint jobs on the painted Micras  I think it may have been started by DaveK ??? They had a duller appearance than the reg SS Micras  after the paint stripper process :tu: Let us know if you find anything out about it RP

Hello
I have one blue "painted" one and one blue plastic covered one.
The plastic one is definitely a extra skin as the plastic one is almost 2mm thicker across the body.
Underneath it looks just like a normal micra . I am waiting for my tools from Loki which are due any day now and then I will dismantle it to have a look underneath. Don't want to use my Crunch is it roughens up the thread a bit.
I bought a lot of TSA micra  confiscations off of ebay and there was one green "painted" micra and the paint was really tatty so I scraped it all off quite easily ( using another micra off course)  and it looks pretty much like any other micra in terms of shine or being polished up .

Maybe will take some pics before and after .

Can't we all drop our pretenses and recognize that the Stainless Steel Micras are superior to colored Micras? Its just a fact, proven by their higher sales numbers.

Here's a post from a long time ago about the different Micra coloured finishes: clicky. Might be helpful for this discussion :)

Under the plastic scales is basically a stainless micra, BUT the screws used are a bit longer to accommodate the scales' thickness. So if you remove the scales everything flops about!
I used to come here a lot.

Hello gang.
ok so took the blue plastic cover off the micra. Underneath was a shiny standard micra, all polished up and looking like a regular micra. Needed a hit of a clean but that was as exciting as it got. :multi:     :drink:

I received a coloured Micra and when I held it it felt immediately weird, like it was thicker.
I thought it was just my impression, maybe due to it being my first coloured one or something.

Isee in this thread newer colored versions are thicker and SS underneath. Glad to know.
I don't like the added thickness, it just spoils a perfectly slim and thin tool.
