Thread of silly SAK prices
on: September 01, 2019, 01:24:54 PM
For general amusement purposes, I thought I'd start a thread where I (or anyone else) can post the silliest deals on offer...

Here's Lyle on Etsy, who has been good enough to REDUCE the price on this highly desirable knife to just $110:

Despite the very long and impressive write-up with detailed dating information that Lyle has kindly provided, he apparently can't tell the difference between a Spartan and an 84mm Sportsman. Still, that "rare" commercial logo on the blade clearly adds inestimable value.

On eBay these start around $8...I too would have a big cheesy grin if I thought some fool would give me 110 smackeroonies for one.

$110! It's a ten dollar knife!

To me, company logos fall under the same umbrella as personalized; no matter how well known the company is. I feel it takes away from the value. Even if I want a knife with a particular logo, I won't pay a premium. With one exception--specific models made ONLY for that company, and no one else.

:iagree:
I have a lightly used climber with a company logo that I like, but it cost 4 bucks.
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

I could maybe pay like 5€ max more than a competitive priced user for a logo I'd particularly want, or market price at most, though I've never really bought a SAK at a common market price yet, to me using my knowledge to seeks deals is a huge part of the jd hobby.

No disagreement here! If I was being charitable this one might be $15 as it's otherwise in good nick. But a random company logo for sure detracts from the value.

I have done that a few times; mainly because the logo on it was a company which operated in my hometown or the local area; or was related to the SWVA or Southern WV coal industry. Been looking for years for a Frontier Pittston Coal branded knife like my Granddad got in the '70s,  I think his was a "1978 Safety Award". His is new in box. I paid $10 a piece for two new Westmoreland Coal Frontiers; from roughly the same era.

Here's another case in point. My Granddad worked for Pittston Virginia Coal in the 1970s; until he was laid off in 1986. For the next ten years, he mostly did service-related work above ground for the mines; namely sales. This set was probably made in the 1990s. S&W knives are typically cheap junk; and I don't consider them valuable.

This seller wants $200 for this set; and I consider it an $20 if you're lucky set.

How about $600.00 for a 2004 mother of pearl SwissChamp?

https://www.ebay.com/itm/c-2004-RARE-NEW-IN-BOX-MOTHER-OF-PEARL-VICTORINOX-SwissChamp-Swiss-Army-Knife/273990037482?hash=item3fcb142fea:g:rbYAAOSwn2xc-SMK

If I'm not mistaken, SwissChamps of the plain variety are around 60 new.  So mother-of-pearl makes it 10x more?

Plus your red $60 knife will have toothpick / tweezers / pen, which the pearly one doesn't :-[

Then again these guys think one is worth just a cent short of a cool thousand:

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F132979231756

I have seen similar before in the second hand record market: some people seem to think that because something was a limited edition, and is now out of print, that they must be able to sell it for 10x what they paid for it. Generally they are wrong...

I have a rare Vic Classic with red cellidor scales for sale. It has a logo on it that says, "The Enzyte Smile." Willing to part with it for only $250.

According to Lyle's very long sales pitch, which in no way contains any bullsmurf:

https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/691932172/vintage-victorinox-knife-rare-martin?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=rare+victorinox&ref=sr_gallery-1-8&organic_search_click=1&pro=1

“The larger blade has a "Martin" logo. As of the time of this listing, the logo has not been connected to a particular company. Furthermore, the Martin logo is no longer being used as it is supposedly available as a download under Martin Vector Logo.”

 :dunno:

I like “As of the time of this listing...” - presumably Lyle's crack team of researchers is working on the problem even now, and further updates can be expected.

Well this one has a story attached:

Worth $500 of anyone’s money. Especially if the main blade has the legendary erect-o-lock feature.

Damn right! Why go to all the investment needed to make a fake Swiss watch when the path to riches is open to anyone with a garage and the wherewithal to make a convincing set of scales?

Honestly, a new MOP Swisschamp costs €420 in the nearby Victorinox outlet store.

Yes, OUTLET.
And yes, Euro, not Dollars.

So it doesn't sound all that crazy to me like the others...

He didn’t even bother to peel off the 9.20 Swiss Francs price tag (about $ 9.50)

And this one used to be 8.40 Swiss Francs, now $375:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/323902561521

Now I’m not denying that these are real gems, in pristine condition and that they have value!

It’s just so funny to see them priced this way with the tags with their original prices shamelessly included in the pictures

A few of these were for two years for sale at the Victorinox Outlet in in the Netherlands.
Although this is an outlet store, the price was about 430 Euro (can't remember exactly). I didn't buy one.

I saw one in the Warsaw showroom around that price, maybe even cheaper, placed so prominently it was clear they didn't actually expect or really plan to sell it, but just gave it a price if someone with more money than sense comes around.

$80 because it says "Baume & Mercier" on it....?  $5 looks nearer the mark to me.

Good job it doesn't say "Patek Philippe" or the seller would probably want $500  :dunno:
