Disclaimer:  Now,  I haven't done the mod yet, just getting ready, just so people aren't disappointed off the bat.  Also, I'll have to come up with an original name...


Anyway,  I've been avoiding modding my Wave for a couple years now, thinking that there isn't a whole lot I would change, and it wouldn't be worth messing with my go to MT.  Then I keep seeing Monrogue's and Aberdrew's, maybe others', Wave/Rebar setups, and I think it's time.

I want to keep PE blade and diamond file, bit driver and can opener (sharpened to box/package opener) on the Wave side.  And keeping the Rebar plier head, some combination of large flat driver, 3d phillips, Wave scissors (trimmed thumb pad), and maybe the saw or serrated blade.  I'm not sure yet how much I can fit in one Rebar handle, so I'll play with it a bit.



One more thing...the only Rebar head I have is the never-used MTO-branded Rebar (from a trade with SteveC).  Personally, I think sticking the MTO-brand on a mash-up fusion of tools seems appropriate.  But if someone disagrees, and wants to trade me a like-new Rebar to keep this one in tact, let me know and I could ship this your way.  Otherwise, I should have some time this weekend to cobble these together.

Dont trim the scissors thumb pad!!!!!

It fits perfectly as is in the penultimate slot on the right of the Rebar handle, next to the large flat or can opener.

Thanks!  I was reading other comments, and saw that it would rest on that clip inside the handle, but I'll gladly leave it alone if it fits.  I have Wave scissors in another Rebar, but with a Wave head, so I figured that was the only reason it fit.  Thanks for saving me on that one!

I have in one of my Rebar handles saw, scissors, 3d phillips and SE blade an it all fits in there great with a washer between the saw and scissors and a washer between the phillips and SE blade :tu:

Here it is...I'm calling it The Mule






On the Rebar side:  saw, Wave scissors, 3D phillips, flat driver
For the Wave side:  PE blade and diamond file, with can opener and bit driver (with 4mm hex bit)

I had wanted to work an awl in there somewhere, I think the plan for version 2.0 is to grind the can opener into one, following Kampfer's idea.

I originally had the saw were a Rebar blade would normally go, like the Knifeless Rebar.  I figured I'd wanted to cover that cutout in the handle, to keep it more ergonomic in plier mode.  But when I tried switching it around, I found it was pretty comfortable if I kept the Wave handle in my palm.



Now since version 1.0 had the flat driver next to the scissors, I cut a notch into the scissors to help me get the driver out of the handle.  I had to grind about an 1/8th of an inch of the thumb tab anyway, so the extra notch was quick.

Well, now I don't need that notch since I rearranged the tools...oh well, it's there if when I change my mind again.

I think there may be different versions of Wave scissors (or maybe they're Fuse, Blast, etc. scissors instead).  I've seen some pics where the thumb tab looks different (I wonder if different scissors would fit without modifying).


Anyway, I like it.  I really like having the bit driver in addition to the separate phillips (specifically that 4mm hex that seems to be everywhere).  And if I can grind out an awl, it will be pretty close to perfect for me.

Awesome job.  It's a great feeling to have a tool that suits you for your needs. :tu:

As for swapping the awl and opener, the wire stripper notch on the opener is also there for clearance against the side (the locking tab pivot), so it would take some work on the awl to get it to fit down in there.  It can be done, just something to keep an eye on, especially if you put a lot of side to side pressure on the awl.  It will be more prone to flexing after making it fit.

Couldn't you just replace the can opener with the Rebar awl ?

The awl is about .4mm thicker than the can opener.  So it might fit, but the lock tab would have some wiggle.  So I could either thin out the awl, or grind the can opener.  We'll see...

Either way before and after pics would be a plus :whistle: :D

As for swapping the awl and opener, the wire stripper notch on the opener is also there for clearance against the side (the locking tab pivot), so it would take some work on the awl to get it to fit down in there.  It can be done, just something to keep an eye on, especially if you put a lot of side to side pressure on the awl.  It will be more prone to flexing after making it fit.

The rebar awl should just drop in as is.
But the plier head may sit higher on it and affect whether the handles will close all the way.
There are ways around this problem but don't stress over it until needed because it doesn't always happen.
Personally I prefer the st300 awl and it isn't that hard to resize the pivot the fit.
The rebar awl lacks the little groove but it's still miles better than the signal awl.
