Single layer vs two layer.
on: August 06, 2016, 04:36:22 PM
In my quest for the most minimalistic edc SAK, I've been on a extended experiment of the one layer vs two layer SAK/s Like the bantam vs the recruit, or cadet vs waiter.

I love the bantam, but at times I miss the two layer can opener for the phillips screws capability. I can use the inner corner of the combo tool on the bantam and it works in a awkward way, but not near as good as the little flat tip in the can opener. The tip of the nail file of the cadet seems to be a very good very small phillips screw tool.

So, in the interest of maximum minimalism, who else has played with the one layer and two layer SAK's to find the best urban edc?
Don't get too serious, just enough will do.

It all depends on your current needs and wishes. If you want a really thin (preferably one layer) SAK; you can always go with the Bantam / Alox Bantam / Apprentice / Waiter, with the small "Quattro" screwdriver attached to it or the keychain.

If you want a small SAK and you are often dealing with the Philips screws, you can get or easily make an Apprentice:

A Waiter-to-Apprentice mod is quick and easy:

A 2-layer knife is my preference. Always gotta have scissors. I also find a 3-layer knife is the max ideal for pocket carry edc. Hence my preference for the Yeoman.

But there will be days when pocket space is a premium hence the need for a 2-layer. And choice falls to the 84mm Golfer. Hope I can finish building one for this puspose. For the time being, 91mm golfer will have to do.

But this goes back to your presonal preference on tools...

Only one choice - a SAK Tinker (either small or standard size). Does everything you'd ever want a knife to do.

My "maximum minimum" has long been a Sportsman with mini-screwdriver in the corkscrew.  Lot of features in a very small package.

A while back I done the Waiter to Apprentice conversion for the Minimalist challenge. It's a pretty good shot at everything I need in one layer. Likewise,my Duke of Blamington mod(a DofE with a spear point blade) actually covers everything I need in just two layers.

But it's fun having overkill!
There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

The Apprentice is definitely a strong contender for a minimal SAK. :tu:

If I have to carry a lot of things in my pockets, I will opt for a Waiter or Cadet (same thickness), though usually, I carry a Pioneer for the stoutness of it, or a Sportsman for added functionality.

I carried the Vic cellidor Bantam a while and experimented with the Waiter, but I returned to the Spartan for the small blade, the awl, 7 mm extra handle, and a stouter thing to pry with. :)

I find the alox Bantam and the Secretary both too thin to use comfortably.
