If you're a fan of CRKT there are 3 good designs here;

I like the petzl knife. but i really don't see the point in having the knife there with all the climbing gear.
specially if you do trad climbing like i do.
so I always end up having a mora like knife in the backpack and a sak or other folder in my pants pocket.
some sheath attached to the harness might work but i fear will catch onto something while going through a crack or something

I don't trad climb but I do spend a lot of time hanging off a rope ;) Most of us carry a SAK of some sort on a long string around our neck and tucked away underneath the shirt.

When rock climbing, I really liked the Leatherman Skeletool.

On ice, since I always had a pack, I like the Leatherman Charge ALX, because you can carry 2 bits to cover all bolts on the gear, you get good pliers AND you get an excellent file for those times when you accidentally run an ice screw into a rock.

Please be really cautious about having cord around your neck when climbing. This has ended very badly before!

Trango make another option with a biner hole

https://www.trango.com/p-265-barracuda-knife.aspx

I'm not a fan of having one on the rack though. It's always concerned me that it might open and nick gear

However this review should have you sorted!
 Compared the lot!

I know a lot of people who climb with just a knife.  I found that the pliers were almost as handy as the blade in a variety of settings.  Stuck screwgate?  2 choices.  Bash it with a rock and hope it opens or put the pliers on it.  For rock climbing, that doesn't happen as often but on ice, frozen carabiners is pretty common.  Again, mostly ice related, but frozen knots can be more easily untied using the pliers head as a marlin spike.  Occasionally an issue on rock after a whipper too, but obviously not as common of an occurence.

I just like having pliers with me I guess.  :D

That's probably a pretty common trait around here.... :D

Actually they can come in pretty handy. Just the last trip a friend had the nuts of his decender starting to get loose and a guy I was repeling with had a carabiners nut so stuck that he spent about 5 minutes trying to open it. I wished I had my multi with me then. I'll probably add a Freestyle to that kit, should be good for such cases.

Thank you for the advice guys - I'm very new to climbing, and to clarify traditional climbing is whats common in ireland.
The petzl locks closed as far as i know, and at £20 delivered isn't too expensive.
I agree with keeping an MT in my pocket or pack.

That trango barracuda looks nice or maybe the edelrid rope knife, it's also pretty cheap too . . .

Take a look at these: http://www.thealpinestart.com/2015/10/comparison-review-climbing-knives/

The ones with a large hole make it easy to carry on a carabiner, they're pretty light-weight, too.

BTW if you're mostly climbing top-rope and not leading, you may not need a knife at all (which this does not change the fact that these knives are cool as hell).

Those CRKT knives are a lot smaller than I realised.

I'm no climber but an old friend of mine carries a Gerber E-Z Out.

You know, I used to agree with that as a blanket statement.  Petzl has had a few missteps though.  Issues with their Grigris and in my case, a Tikka plus headlamp sudden failure on the mountain.  The rubber straps that helps hold it closed broke, spilling the three AAA batteries onto the snowfield.  Nearly a disaster.

Their ice screws are a snag fest without the benefits that the Grivel 360s have in rapid drive with their snag prone handle.

I do like their ice tools, quickdraws and harnesses.

As someone who currently has a dead Tikka + on his desk in pieces, ... yeah.

It was used as a backup during my last trip and managed to open up the battery compartment on its own in the worst possible moment. I lost two eneloops out of it. Luckily my primary light was all it was needed, but :ahhh

Let us know how you like it once you get it.

I've played a bit with one on a few occasions, but as the forum title says, I'm more of a multitool/multifunction knife kind of guy.
