Smashie's Shooting Blog
on: August 20, 2016, 06:12:23 PM
Ok, so Kirky and Gareth have their own, time for me to stop hijacking theirs and have my own.

Unlike the other gents I don't currently shoot in HFT (although this will come). My rifle is set up purely for pest control and to be honest I don't really think picks of dead vermin is appropriate here.

So, my rifle of choice is the Air Arms S510 carbine in .22 (or 5.5mm). Pellet of choice is the Air Arms Diablo Field 5.52mm weighing in at 16 grains. this chronos out at 11.3 ft-lbs. Air arms moderator as well.

This week I have made two significant changes to my shooting, I went to a chiropractor and she freed up my c1, c4 and c5. This made an epic amount of difference to my shooting.

The other change, as has been hinted at in other threads is I changed my scope and mounts.

The scope is now a Hawke Sidewinder 30 6-24x56 20x mildot IR, this is on Sportsmatch high mounts.

Here are some piccies, apart from the first one, all taken today

Now the first target zeroing in the scope, first two shots at the bottom, this as always is at 35m, the largest range I can get without being blown to hell. The next 8 went right through the centre. I am very pleased with this.

Next 10 rounds

and the next

Ok so here's the scope

and the numbers of the box

I think the chiropractor did more for my shooting but the scope and rifle combination is amazing  :tu:

Thanks, but the rifle and scope now are better than me, but god bless the chiropractor who improved things no end  :salute:

Well after my slight accident two weeks ago I went shooting for the fisrt time this morning.

Several phrases spring to mind, the most apt of which would be "couldn't hit a cows arse with a banjo" or "couldn't hit a barn from the inside".

So it's back to chiropracter this week and some more time at the range this week.

That is such a nice looking rifle...but that six shooter is simply  worthy.

Here are some better photos of it. It's the Umarex SAA in .177 pellet, rifled barrel in antique finish. It's surprisingly accurate as well for such a fun little gun to shoot.

An update. Which I should have done before but I forgot about this thread

So the Air Arms Galahad, regulated in 0.177. It's the carbine and it has the very nice walnut stock.

The scope is a Hawke Sidewinder 30 with a half mildot reticle.

Here's the rifle.

And here are the results from 35m yesterday

Now I'm quite happy with those. So Sunday I'm off to shoot at 50m and have a run round (ok walk) an HFT course. Should be interesting.

Well I had a go at the HFT course today and I think I'm going to be having a go at this again. Now it wasn't too windy but I did manage a 53x60.

I was also so chuffed with this score that I forgot my targets from the 50m range, but they were ok as well.

All in all not a bad day  :tu:

Now this will fall squarely into the 'polishing a turd' category.

First off the new walnut stock and the cheek piece mod.

Ok after many cups of tea and much procrastination I've finished it.

New spring and all seals replaced. Spring guide rod and top hat replaced with a TBT drop in kit and greased with lithium based molybdenum disulphide grease.

Blingy cocking grip and trigger guard fitted. Trigger replaced and sears polished.

Off to the range tomorrow for final adjustments.

Just a bit of fun this afternoon, indoor range. The gunsmith let me have a play with his S510. I've never shot this before and the results were very impressive. The rifle was pretty damn good looking too.

It's a Huggett that's been polished and that combined with the blueprinted action makes it almost completely silent.

Ok, trying to be consistent here, from the show us your air guns thread

AA S410 Carbine

Stock disposed of, and it now sits in a very small box. replacement air cylinder has been ordered, along with new seals, new filler port. Some parts stripped for anodising, some for polishing.

It will possibly need a new barrel if what I have planned for it doesn't work out. No I'm not saying what it is, you will have to wait and see.

I have a walnut stock blank on the way, but after seeing a stock in rosewood I'm in a bit of a quandary now.

Worth pointing out that I bought this second hand as a private sale and it really pays to know what you are looking at. The numpty I bought it from had tried to get it to exceed 12ft-lbs with the use of some FAC only parts. However because he was so clueless it never achieved anything near that. The only reason it didn't make it was all the seals in it were rock had and cracked. It's amazing that it held any air at all!
