The 58mm SAKs should not be underestimated.

I kind of don't want to ever participate in a 58mm Challenge. I would be afraid that I would discover that my 91mm/84mm SAKs are unneccesary!

 ;)

I like to think of my 58s as a side arm blade as opposed to my sword.  Each has their purpose.

Finally filled in 2 gaps on my small SAK list. Black Alox Mini Champ & a PTC or Evo 88 (whichever you prefer). With the Vagabond I picked up a few weeks back I was over the moon - until I took the Vagabond camping and he disappeared. Oh well, I can take cold comfort in the notion that the model is well named…

If anyone UK-based is interested I got these from a dealer in the south of England who does some fabulous deals on preloved knives of all sorts. PM me and I’ll share the info as I don’t want to look like I’m advertising to the innocent!

The PTC/Evo 88 is a wonderful knife that I dearly wish Vic would bring back.

I keep a classic in blue translucent scales on my car keys. Sometimes when not working it’s all I have on me

:iagree:  Heck even a primary tool.  I am amazed and not amazed at how my 58s can tackle a lot of tasks.

I've yet to break one and I'm not nice to them either.

The 58mm's are the mighty mites of Sakdom.  They are the little SAK that can.

In most of my life lived in and around Washington D.C., the classic on my keyring was very often my only knife/tool I would have on me. Somehow I survived to reach old age.
Don't get too serious, just enough will do.

:iagree:. I love my Swisschamps, etc. but 9 times out of ten that 58 will do the trick.

 :iagree: :like:

My Manager sealed the deal when pressed to do the work of a larger tool.  I thought it would break and was fine with it since I didn't want to go fetch the "right" tool.  The situation was not right to stop work.  My Manager not only did the job but did it very well.  It was in perfect order afterwards as well.

That was almost ten years ago.

Was it the blade?

I’ll admit that if I have any doubts about the durability of any of the 58mm tools it’s the actual blade itself.  I’ve used and abused the other tools on my 58mm SAKs, especially the scissors, and they have always performed wonderfully and hardly shown much wear and tear at all.

But for some reason that little blade always makes me hesitate. Has anyone really pushed it with the blade on a 58mm? Really tested it under pressure?

The blade seemed shakey so I use it as a keychain knife only- open letters etc.

It was the little philips.  I love the little blade as my scalpel.  Its my razor blade.  I have seen some members do work with their little blade.  I wouldn't call it hard but all things considered hard enough.

I continued to carry that same Manager till recently.  I was gifted a Midnight Manager so I carry it.  I would not hesitate to carry the one I spoke of.

Don't forget that Charles Lindbergh edc'd  a Classic.  I can't imagine him babying his tools.  My father in law borderline abused his and never broke it, as does Mrs. R.  Hers was gifted to her 44 years ago and is still running strong :D

That’s very reassuring!

I’m not sure why I’ve been a little skeptical of the blade on a 58mm… I guess it just looks so small and thin. But I probably shouldn’t doubt Victorinox tools of any size at this point.

I mean, I’m sure I could break the 58mm blade if I tried to use it as a pry bar and really tried. But for it’s intended purpose I’m sure it’s just peachy.

If you need a pry bar in the 58mm range, I would recommend the cuticle pusher.  :tu:

Citing from SAKWiki:

The Cuticle Pusher is a Victorinox 58mm tool.
It is designed for manicure tasks, but it can also be used as a very small spoon, stir-stick, or generic pusher without fear of cutting anything, as it has no sharp edges.
It is currently (2021) only available on the Minichamp, but was earlier available on the Cavalier, the Manicure and the Jetsetter 2.
Best regards and stay safe,

Wolfgang

Liking the larger Classic, the Explorer 81.
NOT the Explorer Gen. Chuck Yeager carried, with the weird blade.
I believe the real Explorer is d/cd

I always have a classic SD stayglow on my key ring. I have been carrying a cadet for a few weeks as well, and I am loving it. Some times I bust out an old pocket pal that my dad passed down to me just for fun.

The smaller SAKs can be great
