Is it worthwhile to sell this PST for $20?
on: September 06, 2016, 05:41:22 AM
Saw this listing: http://www.ebay.com/itm/OLD-ORIGINAL-LEATHERMAN-USA-MULTI-TOOL-PLIERS-KNIFE-POCKET-TOOL-KIT-/322253196093

This is a well used, plain jane  PST. No way in hell I pay $15 shipped for it, left alone $20 + shipping.

Then I saw the engraving on this beat-up tool with the (assumed) owner's address and the date. I am very tempted to ask the seller to "do the right thing" and contact the person with the address. Maybe he already tried, I don't know  :-\ But surely this thing is not in the state of "the Leatherman doesn't appear to have seen much hard use" as he claimed.

You could buy it and send it on to the original owner if you can find them...
Or try to find them anyway. They may have passed on.

You would have to contact his next of kin.

Is it worthwhile to sell this PST for $20?

I say "Yes"

This is a PST with a story - Thanks to some amazing (actually incredible) detective work from our members - A story always makes an MT better IMHO

I like the inscription  - He really valued his MT
EDIT: The original owner has passed away - But this is a little bit of his legacy
It was a Christmas present
And it is a pre-date-coded PST - But with a date

What's not to like ??? !!

..unless you believe in hauntings and ghosts.

The owners spirit will be with the tool forever.....

Cool, so it comes with a Vic Spirit?

I think the original owner would be happy to know it is being looked after.

It is so cool that you guys could dig up so much information. My original thought of "worthwhile" was for the monetary value of the tool alone.

Pretty neat story.  A tool like that is always "worth" it.  It would be neat for his family ( boys ) to have this tool if they aren't the ones selling it.

I bought it.  Maybe I'll bury it in the backyard, then dig it up on Halloween, 2017.

From the seller:

"I did not know the person this came from. It came from a storage unit auction, best I can remember. As you will see, the inscription was made on 12-25-1990 which was 26 years ago. The address is for Port Townsend, Washington which is a long way from here [Oregon]. This came from Salem, Oregon where we have 5 prisons and a lot of transient persons."

Based on the date, this may have been a Christmas present.  Who knows the path it took after that.

My hat is off to you, sir  :hatsoff: When I see listings like this, my first impression would be of another TSA confiscated sale stuffs. I am not fond of TSA confiscated sales, since the stuffs were robbed from their original owners at some point. Think of it like a pawn shop buying stolen goods to sell for profit, except it is all legal here. It is just me and my stand.

At the end of the day, I think you have a cool piece with a bit of a story, which is worth its cost. Do you plan to contact Mrs. Michael at some point in the future for more information about the tool?

If I can find her, I'll probably do that.  I would be more interested in returning it to her or her offspring than keeping it.

I found Earl's nephew on Facebook, but haven't contacted him.  I'll proceed after I get the MT in my hand.

This is an amazing story already - And great work Powernoodle -
If this story concludes with the tool be returned to a family member it is worthy of the papers or even TV!!
I can just see a slot on breakfast TV, or such like, where they tell the story of Earl and his favourite MT in the 90s, his passing, the tool emerging on ebay (several years after his death) , MTo members picking it up, PN buying the tool, finding the family and returning the tool - WOW  :tu:

It would be one of those really uplifting stories of human life, resourcefulness and kindness amidst all the depressing crap we usually get.
And very relevant to the Digital age with ebay, forums, googlemaps, online register of deaths  etc
... And as an aside - Great publicity for MTo - If we want it!!

I'm in the witness protection program, so I can't reveal my true identity in the media.  Maybe CBS could blur my face out and disguise my voice when I'm featured on 60 Minutes.

I wouldn't trust today's media not to run the story with a "Gang of knife crazies engage in Internet stalking." angle.
