DAY 4

I used the eyeglass driver to change a battery.

BTW I assume the retractable pen in a Manager doesn't count as an extra layer, so a Manager would still be a valid carry? Would have been useful today as I went into a meeting without a pen and it wasn't appropriate to leave the meeting to get one, so I may carry my Manager tomorrow.

It's a rather beat-up one with translucent blue scales, but I have some 58mm solid red scales with pen slot on order (and a new slider button). I'm quite a traditionalist, I much prefer solid scales!

A Manager is fine.  The 2 layer 58mm knives seem to offer the most utility for their size - especially if you consider the extra scale tools available.  Maximal minimalism. :tu:

58mm's are great and all, but how would one get by with that small blade as your only blade?

I would, by then I couldn't bring my Cadet! I need at least two inches of sweet victorinox steel to get me through my day. :-)

It's not so bad, if your day doesn't consist of a lot of cutting. I'm an office don't. Most days at the office, I only have a Classic on my keyring, or in my pocket. If I want something bigger just for the sake of carrying it, I'll do so, although I usually like small and light when wearing slacks.

Maybe I'll try it for one or two days out of the month, maybe. :D

But it's not just the larger blade, it's also the three different sizes of screw driver tips the Cadet has! I just feel naked with out it!  :ahhh

Day 4:

One of the drives failed in the RAID array in my DR site... New drive arrived. Needs opening.

Afterwards, a little honing on the bottom of a ceramic coffee cup.

This one gets the coffee (it's larger and more accurately represents my mood most mornings):

Looking good Gents!

Day 4: Mail call with the cheese sword. A 3½ ounce hammer for challenge-related purposes  :D

I REALLY felt the lack of openers/drivers on the cheese sword today. I discovered a loose screw on my bike reflector mount during my afternoon commute.
A bantam/cadet/compact driver would have been preferable to the corkscrew I ended up trying to use instead

So were you successful in tightening the screw? Was the SAK corkscrew up to the task or did you have to reach for another tool?

I was able to budge the screw. But failed to tighten it enough. I had no other tools available to do the job, so my bike was not up to code until I got home and found a proper bit ratchet.
All I know is that I don't know anything - but I can't prove it!

Day 4, Swiss Army issue 1971.  :)
Sweet!  :tu:

Yours too Mags.  :tu: The standard issue alox seems to be a popular minimalist choice, whether it be Vic or Wenger. They may lack the tool selection of the officer knives, but what tools they do have are hearty! I still wonder why they replaced them with 111's when they are still so popular and useful.  ???

Good to know the knife's limitations I suppose. I have a Käsemesser in the kitchen drawer that I can't use this month because I need to open tin cans too often!  :ahhh Even the combo tool on the Compact I was carrying yesterday was not a good choice, I prefer the standard opener for that, and also it's so much better for screws.

Here's the Tinker along with a couple of Classics that may also see a day or two out this month. :D

Day 4

Today's biggest task was opening a bottle, and the can opener was up for it. I must admit that I don't know how you'd open a can with it (and the only YouTube video on the subject did it wrong) but it works surprisingly well for opening caps.

I've done it before, but I don't intend doing the whole month with just 58mm SAKs

I have a question. If I take a pair of tweezers out of my classic and stick them in my wallet just in case, is that cheating? I am of course carrying an alox cadet, so it doesn't have tweezers on it's own.

I'd say it's certainly allowed. :tu:  The pen is a scale tool, not another layer. :)

Today I only had my new black onyx Rambler on me. Started on my keys, ended in my coin pocket alone. :D

Are other tools permitted? Like, what if I were carrying, say, slip and snup scissors, a small pair of IDL pliers, etc?

Rule number 5 of this challenge says you can carry dedicated tools for specific tasks so I would think it is OK.

"5. No other multis or knives allowed.  Dedicated tools are OK if you need them for a particular job (pliers, saw, etc.)"
