Hot water is correct.  Don't know where the hosmurfer came from.

Anyway I am wondering if one needs to take special care with a BO finish.

Thanks. John

It's a naughty word filter John - basically it automatically replaces the "naughty" word with "smurf" - can be quite amusing sometimes.

Re cleaning the BO - I'd say that BO finishes vary a lot and some seem to be more robust than others! Warm / hot water shouldn't do any damage, but maybe lightly wipe rather than scrub with a toothbrush.
I used to come here a lot.

Dave

Between the forum "correcting" things and my ipad mini (when I use it) doing the same, it's a wonder that my messages make any sense at all :D

Thanks for the info on the BO finish.  Will have to experiment in a "gentle" fashion.

John.

Just to make sure. Is rubbing alcohol chemically ok to clean sticky packing tape residue off a blade?

Thank you. I've gotten careful/paranoid now that I finally have a knife over worth over a hundred bucks.  :D

I'll actually try the olive oil, more natural remedies are awesome ;)

Sometimes you have to let it sit on there for a bit but it should dissolve the residue.

In general, I have picked up lots of useful stuff for cleaning multis and pocket knives in the section for dental hygiene at the local pharmacies. http://www.jordan.no/Munn/Tannstikkere/Clean-Between-Sticks-Regular are awesome to reach down into crevices.

When leaving them in a vehicle for emergencies, how often would you take them out to 'oil' them.

I've got a LM Surge and a Gerber MP400 in my car in a canvas case and gave them both a good going over with WD before they were stored in there. I plan to check them monthly and adjust how often they are WD'd based on how they fair.

I'm guessing there are many out there who also do this. If so how often to you give them a lube to prevent rust and what with?

I never clean mine. As long as it stays dry.

I think I had a good idea, probably not, but maybe... Would it be plausible to dry a tool or knife out well in a bag of rice? It draws moisture out of the inside of phones! Phones are sealed, but...

It's hard to dry out the inside nooks and crannies of a multitool or in-between pivots. Has anyone tried this?

You can use a water displacing oil with a multi, so even disregarding the fact they're stainless, I guess that's why nobody has tried rice?

Yes it is. Someone did that recently with their opie knife. Can't remember who though.

Doh! Of course, with an Opinel it makes perfect sense. I stand corrected.  :salute:

Anyone else using only mineral oil to oil their knives/tools?

I oiled my sak a while back and looking into it now I see very small concentration of opaque white, kind of crystallization. Could have been from anything.

I've always had good luck cleaning my knives/mt's with baby wipes or clorox wipes..

For cleaning knives, tools, firearms and pretty much any machinery, I've recently fallen in love with these.

Cheap enough I don't worry about breaking them, tough enough I haven't broken one yet. I reshaped one so it didn't have a pointy tip and narrowed it's other end with a file, the others I've left as is. The modded and the stock one are at my desk, one in my pack, one in my range box and one in my overnight kit's supplies. And a few more in storage.

These and the 6-for-a-buck toothbrushes and qtips with cleaning patches or chunks of old tshirt

+1 on using compressed air. I've even used the canned air for dusting your computer keyboard. Then follow up with your favorite lubricant

Rust removal, I soak the tool in white vinegar for at least 24hrs then rinse. Air dry, then use 0000 steel wool to hit any problem spots.
