GRIPsher - Soon on Kickstarter
on: September 22, 2016, 09:46:55 AM
So, I saw this and there is not much around about it as it's kickstarter campaign will only start in a week.
Anyway, I think it looks different and interesting.

I have trouble at the moment justifying new tools that do the same as old tools...
BUT
That is just weird enough that I need one.

Yeah, its not just a copy of another tool, at least not one I have seen before.

Not too hot on the 4 pointy screwdrivers at each corner but else it looks like fun.

Now that's an innovative design. not a copy of anything. Kudos to the designers. I really liked the blade.
It's a bit big for key-carry, but it's very interesting. I'll wait for Chako to do a photo essay on it.  :D

I've got to say I like that one.  As has been said, it isn't the same old pile of functions in a different order.  I am not sure how useful it would be, and certainly not for prolonged use, but it does look pretty handy to have clipped to an EDC bag or something similar.

I actually like this for the most part. The only thing is carrying it on your keys seems like it would be uncomfortable and large as well as pointy. The file looks like a afterthought. Besides that it seems great (for what it is). I could definately see hanging this on a pack or whatever your carrying. It shows some promise and if the price is right I may have to get one (if/when) it comes to market.

I mean, it's definitely not a Metperial, but it looks pretty cool.

Pros:

- Novelty
- Spanner integrated
- Looks strong but is relatively small
- Pairs very well with a Vic Executive or Voyager
- If you remove the safety blade could be TSA complaint
- 4 drivers and optionally can carry a personal selection of 2 more bits
- You can lock it like a ViseGrip or LM Crunch!

Cons:

- Too pointy and big to carry in the keychain.
Uncomfortable even with rubber protections
Perhaps the only good personal carry will be attached to a loop, like a carabiner
- Wide. Difficult to use in narrow spaces
- Heavy?
- $$$?

:pok:  Plastic hex wrench parts though... that means tough nuts will probably tear it up in nothing flat.

Hey everyone.  My name is Christian Reed and i made the GRIPsher multi-tool.  I came across this discussion and wanted to make myself avliable to answer any questions.  Two I see off the bat are:

1) What about the pointy edges? - hopefully we reach our stretch goals and can include a free case with the tool (pictures are on the page itself of the case that also holds hex bits)
2) Wont nylon be ruined by over torquing? -  The bits and bolts themselves are designed to torque out (cam out) before they can do any damage to jaws themselves.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any other qiestions and I would be happy to answer them!

So I commented on his FB page: Plastic/nylon hex grippers ... on tough nut would tear that apart fast. The rest of it looks quite interesting.

They replied: The jaws are glass reinforced and designed to allow the bit to cam out in the event of too much torque being applied.

Me: Why not make them out of metal then? ... Only makes sense, especially as a possible bicycle tool. The videos only show it loosening stuff that already look loosened. Don't see much on the pliers 'cept bending a piece of sheet metal.

They replied: It is a much more complicated part to make out of metal and would greatly increase the cost and make it hard to get a consistent color on it.

I'll stick with a Leatherman PST and a small Crecent wrench. Might not be cute or GID, yet they are reliable.  :salute:

crreed: A note on the Kickstarter campaign: I like the silver better than the black, but I like a service member getting something nice too, so black it is... In other words: An option to request the silver version for myself, while still donating to a service member would be nice. Really not important, but I thought I'd mention it in case other backers share my preferences.

First I've heard of this. I can say, the dude's in Boston. That's the Prudential Building and Boston skyline seen from the Cambridge side of the Charles River. He then states he's an MIT engineer and invented this. Wonder if I could track him down and chat a bit...

I worry about the glow in the dark bit holder, and as others said, it's weakness there. It is big and round, but maybe clipped to a pack strap or a gun range bag, it might be helpful for tear-downs and field stripping and whatnot.

I feel like my PS4 does most of what this does without the bits. If I'm adding a bit kit I'm adding a bigger tool maybe?

Is crreed still active here? We could be a valuable test bed

PM'd the inventor. We are in the same town, afterall. Unfortunately he's not been active here since about Oct 2016. Probably been busy getting these produced.

Hopefully I'll hear from him soon.

Well, he only posted that single post in this thread. So, then I also guess he won't be able to reply to ThundahBeagle's PM. (You need five posts for that, don't you?)

But perhaps he will receive an email notification that I've reached out to him. I asked him to either contact me through MTO PM or to hop back on the boards.

Also...not very logical or wise to hop on the boards of a giant, worldwide multi tool forum just for one post (to announce your product) and then disappear for  a year and a half. Granted, he may have proprietary trade secrets he doesn't want to let out of the bag, but MTO and its Store could have been a huge, worldwide outlet for him. Maybe, if the product is good, it still could be.
