stopped at a thrift store yesterday, they had a NES for sale,
NES, power cable, 2 controllers, 1 Light gun. Mario/Duck hunt game

..

..

$199.99

well, I did NOT get a NES today

oh well, the Mini NES coming in November is on my Christmas list

yup, the NES is getting expensive. I could not see paying $199.99 for a 30 year old system. I will be checking for your stuff tomorrow. Possibly tonight if I don't fall asleep in the next 30 minutes.  :salute:

no rush, I appreciate you looking whenever you do it.
I have seen NES systems going for $80,  not 200.  this system had no box, or anything, and I really doubt it worked,  it was in horrible shape
If I can help, let me know

I would love to find a way to play Joust on my tablet.

I go much further back than 8 bit games!

Def

heck,  I play Zork from time to time.  I go back to Atari, Colecovision, Intellivision, etc.  but my favorite era is 8-bit and 16-bit

This was the first game system I had in the house:

(Image removed from quote.)

The Atari 2600 was a HUGE upgrade for us when it came out!

I recall not getting a Nintendo for a while- because we traveled a lot I actually wanted a Game Boy so o could play games while camping or traveling but my parents decided to get the full blown NES for the same price as a Game Boy so both my brother and I could play.

Which I hated because he is three years older than me and beat me at everything:facepalm:

Def

I didn't actually expect Grant to have a pre-8-bit example, since all game consoles I know of with a general purpose chip has been 8 bits or more, but of course, those with dedicated controllers can be said to pre-date the 8-bits systems.  :hatsoff: (But the Colecovision didn't have Joust, so there! :D )

I didn't have access to a NES back then, so the actual HW has little to no sentimental value to me, so I would have bought something like https://www.nintendo.com/nes-classic (Emulator with 30 games and a controller, HDMI out.)

The Telstar had several game options like Pong and Tennis.  If I recall correctly you could actually play doubles tennis on it too, but it goes way back into the 70's. Just in case anyone else doesn't know how to work the Google, here's a link to Wikipedia about it.  :D

I had to go on a search to find the Pong machine I had back in the late 70s. After much looking...there is even a pong museum online...I have found it. We had a Radio Shack TV Scoreboard.

I found 2 Playstation 1 consoles

1 PSOne console

1 Dreamcast (even have  the Dreamcast keyboard and mouse

now, time to see what works and what does not.  I have some fun times ahead, maybe, pending confirmation of what works.

I found a nice little USB hub

found it on ebay, and loved the look, so I decided I wanted to buy it, and rip the guts out for a nice little project.

for the project, I also had a USB hub (3 port) with ethernet connection and it has a short cable, which is great and it has a micro USB connection instead of a standard, this is perfect for what comes.

so I put a Raspberry Pi Zero inside

this is a great little computer, but it only provides one micro USB connection, and no networking.  that is why my little white usb hub/network adapter is a perfect fit (and only cost $3)

so I mounted the Pi Zero inside and custom fitted the USB hub and network adapter.
all three adapters on this board are on the same side, and since I wanted the power, and mini HDMI flush mounted on the side, so I ended up having to run the USB hub/network adapter cable out the side and back in.  looks stupid, but once you plug in the hdmi and power, it does not look bad.  the Network adapter is on the right side of the system, almost at the front (forgot to take a picture of that )

for software, I loaded RetroPie  which is amazing!

here are some photos (of my tv) running the Raspberry Pi and RetroPie with the updated theme

I also bought a $2 USB WiFi N adapter that I can use in if I need network access via wifi.

as a nice little bonus, one of the optional packages in RetroPie is Kodi, so playing movies is also cooked into my "Little Genesis" system.

I was able to get an NES Classic Edition!

the store I went to only received 3 of them,  but I was in line at place number 2.  I had to wait an hour and a half, but that is not so bad for a successful acquisition.

not going to open it tonight, but I will report back here once I have to to play with it.

Congratulations!

I was giving serious thought to getting one, but my all time favourite game (Bionic Commando) isn't on it, and besides, I finished it years ago.  It might be cool to play it again to beat it again (if I still can!  :P) but not enough to buy a whole system that I will probably forget about after I'm done.

well,  it looks like someone managed to hack the NES classic even further.
the first hack allowed adding about 30 more games, but this new hack allows for hundreds of games.
......and auto searching for box art
.........and adding a key combo to get back to the menu instead of pressing the reset button.

http://nintendotoday.com/new-nes-mini-hack-adds-700-games/

I played around and hacked mine to some degree.  what a blast!

From the linked page “But that’s nothing compared to the latest NES mini hack, which adds the entire NES library. That’s right, the hack adds 700 NES games to the NES Classic.” That should be a clear confirmation Bionic Commando is now available. :)

some games still do not work because the emulator that Nintendo wrote does not support certain mappers, or modes.

Gauntlet, for example, used "four screen" and that is not supported at all, others have to be patched to use a different mapper, and that is actually automated by the program that applies the hack.  this fixes games that would not have been natively supported, such as Battletoads.

Interesting, i remember reading just a few weeks ago that something like this would be impossible because Nintendo only left enough space in the NES classic for another ~40 games or so. Neat that this isn't the case.

I have a Raspberry Pi 3 with retroPie setup on it at home, and  I (and more importantly, the missus) really like it. Getting the chance to finally beat the original Gran Turismo is pretty neat, and my wife gets to play Sega Mega Drive games to her nostalgic hearts content. I just wish N64 game emulation was more reliable.

Oh, and Detron, I saw you were looking for a Game Boy Advance? I think I have my old one floating around here someplace (i know I've seen it recently). Its probably in pretty rough shape, but i believe it still  works (unless some 10 year old batteries got left in it  :o). Want it?

On the one hand, I'd love to build an old arcade game housing and install a Raspberry Pi in it loaded with game emulators so you could play hundreds of classics on one unit.....

On the other, I really enjoy sitting.....  :ahhh
