EDC decision: Handyman or Huntsman/PS4 combo?
on: October 13, 2016, 10:54:05 AM
Trying to decide between these two options and would appreciate any advice.

For the record I will have a midnite manager on my keyring at all times and a Spirit is never too far away (workbag/vehicle). Just looking for a combo I can always have on my person without thinking about it (UK laws). At least once a day I'm running to my vehicle or unpacking my work bag to get at the Spirit, but pretty much everything I'm doing could be covered by one of the options above (need a saw, file, scissors, corkscrew, basic pliers, etc).

Which is better though?

Is the small combo file on the PS4 decent enough in a pinch?

Are the pliers on the PS4 so much more capable than the Handyman  as to justify an extra carry?

Is there another combo/option I've missed here?

I'd say the PS4 pliers are a lot better than the Vic ones and would definitely warrant carrying  one - they are pretty small in your pocket. I EDC'd a Huntsman for years so would pick that one. Good luck with your decision.  :salute:

Hmmm, both the Handyman and Huntsman are good...

Go with the Huntsman if you don't mind the small file... pliers on the PS4 are definitely more capable...

Pliers on the PS4 are better than the Handyman  for sure, but the rest of the tools let it down.  I'd go for a Ranger + Style PS if you need the file and saw regularly.  The tweezers on the PS are better than Vic ones too, and you get a nice nailfile/small flat driver.

Good call  :tu: Something like the IDL T7 or T5 with the Ranger would be another option, and give you a full form Phillips

I had this same dilemma and used to carry the Climber/PS4 combo. However, I found it to be inconvenient to have my tools split between a SAK and Leatherman. Now I just carry the Swiss Champ.
The right tool is the one you have on you

Thanks for the replies thus far, much appreciated.

The Style PS was mentioned but this doesn't really appeal as it gives me only the pliers.....I have the nail file/ wee flat driver on my keychain vic manager (and I don't file my nails).

Any other input greatly appreciated.....especially about the PS4's file capability....I've never had one in hand so not sure about it.

The Ranger/ IDL option is food for thought.  :-\

Get a SOG Crossgrip

or a IDL T10

Great Pliers

(T7 or T5 are not worth)

I like the Handyman better than the Huntsman but as someone mentioned I would just go with the Swisschamp and PS4.  That I think would be a great combo or just belt carry the Spirit.
