Stayglow: Yes or No?
on: November 02, 2016, 05:20:52 PM
Amici,
Just thought I would throw it out there to get an overall opinion on how you all feel about those Nylon stay glow scales that sometimes seem to be all the rage..

Personally, I'm not a big fan.. I purchased a few years ago a beautiful Master Craftsman with yellow stay glow scales because at the time I thought it could serve some sort of function when in the field, but alas it did not.. In the end, at least to me, it makes the tool look like cheap compared to straight nylon or cellidor.

Ironically, the Victorinox coat of arms shield which is print applied onto the nylon scales has held up rather well compared to my other examples.. And it's not from lack of use either, since in the beginning, it was used allot, before it's sci-fi appearance began to irk me.

Cheers,
Serge

They look cool in some of the photos, but the color isn't "me," so it's doubtful I'd buy a SAK just for that color. There would have to be some other very compelling reason aside from the scales color.

I agree with Serge: Stayglow scales are excruciatingly ugly. I usually like bright colours, but the radioactive look doesn't appeal to me in the slightest.

I don't own any, but only because I was never faced with the right tool at the right price. I think they look fine, and nylon scales can be a little more grippy than celidor. I wouldn't go out of my way to get one, nor would I specifically avoid one. I don't see any practicality or added functionality with having GITD scales though, as I don't think I've ever had call cut operate a knife in darkness anyway

If nylon (including stayglow) came in Plus variety, I'd have it on all my user SAKs.

I have red nylon on my 84mm (AFAIK, no stayglow 84mm scales?). I know there are rarer cellidor 84mm scales with a pin hole but AFAIK no pen hole.

On my 91's I'm all cellidor and plus for my users anyway. I use the pen A LOT.

Granted if stayglow scales had a pen it would probably be a highlighter.

Amici,
I have the same Stay glow scales as posted above and as I posted earlier, cannot STAND them... Once again, they not only make a superior tool look cheap, but the "glow" doesn't even work that great anyhoos.. Just as soon as I find some real deal Eco-line Nylon scales, off with the stay glows, and one with the real deals..

Cheers,
Serge

The more I try different colour scales, the more I end up realising I think I actually like the traditional solid red ones the best, LOL! Black looks okay, but seems to show finger marks and scratches more than red

I think my ideal scales would be red nylon "Plus" scales (which don't exist AFAIK) with the metal logo from the celidor scales inset somehow. I like how the nylon scales don't get scratched up so easily, but not how the painted-on cross wears-off quite easily

One of the great things about red scales, is it magically makes the knife "harmless" in the eyes of the masses. Even folks who glance at a nice stag handled slipjoint and their eyes scream "KNIFE!!!!"  :ahhh glance at a red scaled SAK, and their eyes say "Oh, he's just got one of those gadgetty Swiss things"

I have a habit of always carrying a red scaled SAK if I'm carrying a locking bladed pliers tool. The SAK comes out when in the presence of the uninitiated, and saves the barrage of nonsensical questions of legalities and practicalities. I've no problem "enlightening" these people, but it sometimes can be quite distracting trying to be an idiot tamer when you're trying to fix something.

Aside from the mentioned lack of plus scales, the main thing I don't like about stayglow (minor gripe) is that you can kinda see the bushings through them in some cases...granted, on actual transparent scales it doesn't bother me because it's intentional.

However...if I have a few knives for sale online and one is stayglow but otherwise identical...it sells for more than the others. Especially something like a stayglow Deluxe Tinker or Explorer that you don't often see.

I'm glad they exist. but I'm just a plus scales type dude. Same way with scissors. I only carry SAKs with scissors.

I'm sure many of you have seen the recent mods (here and on instagram) which have glowing epoxy (?) in the cross cut-out on custom metal scales, so only the cross glows. I think it's cool though not really functional as a beacon in the darkness.

I wonder how stayglow would compare to a glowing type of g10-like material in terms of brightness and color choices.

5 more years development on home 3D printers and I'll probably get one pretty much just to make scales. And replacements for missing toy robot fists,

This is one of the reasons I often carry both a SAK and a small UK-legal Spyderco (e.g. Pingu or Urban), the other is that I tend to use the Spyderco for the more heavy duty tasks and the SAK blade for food prep and other lighter cutting duties.

I like 'em on 58mm little knives, otherwise it just looks "too much", in my opinion.

And by the way, does anyone know where I could source a set of spare 58mm ones?

I like Stayglow in theory - for many of the same reasons that I like my glow in the dark Nalgene bottle- but now that I think about it I don't really see how it could be helpful if you carry the knife in the pocket like most people seem to... it's not in the light, so how's it supposed to get enough charge to glow so you can find it?
Of course, there are those people that hang their SAKs from carabiners on their belts or belt loops, and for them it would work. I am not one of those people. I dislike having to disconnect my knife from something before I use it or having it tethered to my body- it gets in the way for me.
Also, yellow is not my color, so Stayglow doesn't appeal to me asthetically.

I do wish that more models were available with nylon scales around here.

Stayglow is an excuse for grown men to play with glowy toys.

I prefer the durability of nylon over cellidor . I've switched out the cellidor scales on several SAKS with red or black nylon scales.

But I do have one stayglow SAK because stayglow is fun.

I have a Classic SC in Stayglow and really like it.  Since it's on my keychain, it charges while I'm driving.  Many times I've dropped my keys in the garage, or while getting through the dark laundry room between the garage and the house.  I'm amazed at how brightly the Classic glows after a drive home.  Of course, during the winter it may not get that much sun.  However, I think it's still worth it.  I also like the solidity and texture of the nylon material.

As for 91mm scales, I'd love a Huntsman in Stayglow for outdoor use.  But would also seriously vote for the Plus option too.
