If you had £1000...
on: September 13, 2008, 03:52:09 PM
...To spend on a new bike what would it be ???

Once I've been at my new job for a bit, and am happy that I'm secure there, I'm think of asking to be put on this scheme http://www.cyclescheme.co.uk/home,intro.htm, basicaly it allows me to get a decent bike, I pay half and the govenment picks up the rest :)

So what to get ???

The truth is I'm very tempted to get another folder, as they really suit my car free lifestyle the best, as there's no problem finding a space for them, or putting them on the train, or even in a Taxi's boot/trunk if I really get stuck :)

Having said that I'm very tempted to get my dream bike http://www.thorncycles.co.uk/raventour.html

But I'm not at all sure it'd be very good as an everyday bike as it's too big to easily take on the train, and mores to the point I've already got a heavy lifter of a bike in my Yuba, so no a Folder or a Mini bike it's pretty much got to be :)

So the candidates...

Dahon Speed TR

P model Brompton

Or the Pashley equivelent to the Moulton

Dahon Hammerhead or similar

Or a Bike Friday Pocket Llama :)

I'm having a tough time choosing, so I'd be happy to get any opinions, or even some recommendationd for bikes I might have overlooked :)

Thanks in advance guys

swobo folsom

and rest of the money id spend on tool&spare part kit, good pair of shoes, and on brooks b17 saddle.

" The one-speed, coaster-brake, knock-around Folsom begs to be ridden with one hand on the bars and the other around a box of cans. With no brake levers to grab, you will always have one hand free for waving, not drowning. Remember the thrill of laying down a huge skidding fish-tail? This bike will make you laugh.

We wanted a kicked-back urban bash-mobile that can be dropped, stepped on, bike-piled and launched. All our bikes can be ridden in jeans, but the Folsom can be ridden in a snowmobile suit.

The frame is oversize round and box section aluminum. Light and tough. Our beefy rear-entry dropouts have an integrated hub adjuster/chain-tensioning screw; a nice detail if you ever want to retro fit a single-speed non-coaster brake hub into the frame.

With some BMX dust thrown into the look, feel and ride, it begs to be beaten into submission. Both front and rear hubs are bolt-on. Tires, handlebars, stem and pedals are BMX bomb-proof. Like all the Swobo bikes, it sports our exclusive fork, saddle, grips, seat collars and handlebar end caps. Our custom 4" rise handlebars are designed to work with a wide range of human hand, arm positions, and lengths for stand-up, push or sit-down riding styles.

Primer Grey finish is coated with a super-hard matte clear coat. Two sizes, no fooling around."

1000 pounds?

I'd buy me a nice three-speed and then spend the remaining 900 on....

I have no idea. I've never had that much money!

Maybe I could buy a...car?

or...(quick math) - enough groceries that I wouldn't have to leave home for six months!

I'd stuff it all in savings. Then, a year later I would buy a decent bike and still have around 1000 pounds. :D

Nope sadly the sceme doesn't work like that, you half of the money is partly a tax concession, and the rest comes directly from you wages :)

But your still getting an expensive bike that you'd probably never be able to afford for half price :)
