Totally see and respect the 'in box' and 'unused' angle of SAK collecting.Having a pristine unused item, maybe from 50 years ago, is, of course, pretty special - And actually pretty rare/unusual - Whoever keeps boxes and doesn't use their SAKs all those years !!But it's not for me for several reasons:As already mentioned - The price rocketsTo me a SAK collection should be visible - which it's not if it's in its box - So you have to get it out to admire it!Also to me SAKs are tools and users - If it's NIB/NOS - It has not had a 'proper' life (IMHO) - So most of my oldies show a few signs of use - which to me, is as it should be. I like to think of all the handy jobs they've done for their previous owners That's just my views And to explicitly answer your question - Of couse I'll say buy without the box - And as some pointed out above - It might be your only chance!
The ultimate, in my mind, is finding the box with the original price tag and/or sales receipt included
That is totally awesome seeing the boxes for those older models. I think I still have the boxes to the Boy scout SAKS I got when I was old enough when starting scouts. But that is only a few models, but the most sentimental to me.

It would be cool someday to have the spinning showcase display for my SAKS that I don't use but just like to look at. The older boxes are awesome and very nostalgic!

Thankfully, boxed versions do show up from time to time:(Image removed from quote.)

Here's an example of buying a knife and hoping for a mint in box one to come along later, a 1962 Soldier:
As the Soldier gets issued with his SAK from the quartermaster's stores - Then one imagines it is immediately put to use and in the kit bag - With the box discarded - and probably not even issued from the stores.
Issue sheath?
Either way, congrats Lisa...it's a real beauty!!
Just as an update to this thread I noticed that of the last 30 SAKs I've purchased 17 were in either a box or tin. I really thought I bought mint-in-box more often, but apparently not.

So overall pretty pleased with that one !!
