What the...?
on: September 20, 2008, 06:15:23 AM

No wonder it kept losing contact and rattled. What the heck is up with this?

Ick, I forgot to turn flash off for that one. :D

EDIT: If you can't tell, one is a spring and the other is a little plate thing.

Hmmmm....  Mine has the plate and the plate is spring loaded.  Has the plate fallen off the other one?

I dunno, I'd have hoped to notice something like that... the one I was having problems with was the one with the contact plate anyhow.

I just checked them side by side, then switched the heads, the spring-only one floods a little, is a bit weaker, and a bit discolored.

And then I tried to pull the contact plate out... I think there would have been considerable force to remove it. =|

EDIT: Pulling on the contact plate seems to have fixed it, but now I don't believe that thing could have fallen out on its own.

Okay. Definitely something going on here. I just checked the front of these LED lights...

The one with the contact plate inside has a small LED in the back of the reflector. The one with a bare spring has a large bulb of an LED that sticks out into the reflector.

Defective, or multiple versions?

There are multiple versions of that light that I've seen.  I've seen them with a Luxeon LED, and with a K2 LED.  This would describe the differences you're seeing in the LEDs and beam profiles.  If you look at the emitter yellow, you will see the small yellow die in the center, which is mounted to a small reflector in the LED itself.  The reflector in the K2 will have a hexagonal shape, and the Luxeon reflector will be round.  Is that what you're seeing?

I've had both versions in the past, but I don't remember them having a different contact in the head.

One is a small rectangle set down in the reflecter, the other is a huge bulb that comes out.

I was not aware they made these with different emitters. :o

You mean one of them has an incandescent bulb in it, like in a Maglite?  I wasn't aware that there was an incandescent version available.

Aye, it's quite bulbous. :D

Is it just a larger LED?  Or is there some sort of cover on it?

I'm thinking the diode is inside of a plastic or glass bulb.

You've never seen an LED with a bulb before? What? :D

Like that instead of a square diode sitting by itself in the back of the reflector.

Yes, please.  Are both of these lights 2AA, or is one 2AAA?  I think the 2AAA have the LED as in your diagram above.  It would have a more purple tint, while the 2AA with a Luxeon LED would have a whiter, cleaner, brighter beam.

It's as described. Except both lights are 2AAA. :D

Hmmm...  It seems like they may have switched to the Luxeon (or similar) emitters on the 2AAA.  Is the one that doesn't look like the diagram you posted above newer than the other one?

The newer one has the contact plate and a square-like diode, with a much cleaner white light, though with less flood.

I wonder how many times they'ved switched emitters...

EDIT: Shot an email off to inova.

I would say this is the first switch on the 2AAA.  I remember when it came out that it had a 5mm Nichia emitter, as the one you've described.  The switch to the Luxeon (or similar) on the new ones is news to me, and good news!  I may actually buy one now.
