Hidden safety belt cutting functionality of Skeletool?
on: January 28, 2017, 02:57:48 AM
Greetings fellow Skeletool users!

I wonder if this topic has been discussed before but I just noticed this dent

in Skeletool's handle makes it possible to open the blade

which makes it better(?) for e.g. safely cutting a safety belt

You just have to make sure the tip of the blade is sharp for this to work. Mine got dull after stabbing some aluminum cans and need re-sharpening.

Doubt it is intentional, but yeah, good observation. This is an old school, no mod hack of the tool. I will remember this when I have my Skele with me.

It won’t work. It is clumsy, awkward and your hand will be in the way. First of all you need to keep a constant pressure on the pliers to keep them closed, and even doing so, you won’t even be able to cut paper this way.

I think it's a very cool discovery. But for the sake personal safety of folks who may depend on this hack, maybe take Niro's comment in consideration.

But maybe to view this in another way, maybe another way to cut piping or wires in a more controlled manner?

I need to do more testing. I tested it with the leather strap (in the picture) and was able to cut it.
I'll post a video once I get home.

My first attempt to test the functionality was succes and I was able to easily cut through and old tennis sock. Unfortuntaly the second test with another sock failed after I punched the screwdriver through the fabric and it got stuck. That was the one that I got on the video:

As OldBoy2016 said, this hack might work for you but no-one should trust their life on it.

I don't have anything that resembles a safety belt at the moment. I'll post another video once I get my hands on some straps.
