Whatever you need, buy a cheap one first time round.  If you use it lots or break it, buy a good one to replace it.  If you don't use it, you've not lost much.

Disagreeing here - I have some decent second-hand Knipex- tools here, none of my hammers was new when I got them, a couple of saws and even most of my electrically powered tools were dirt-cheap, used, but built for eternity. So I'd say, wherever possible, go for good brands, but used tools ;-).

A couple that first comes to mind:

Knipex Mini 5"
Knipex Cobra 6"

Strongly agree !

I have both the 6" pliers wrench and Cobra for small tasks around the house, and carry a 5" Cobra in my EDC bag. They are excellent!

Household supplies should include:

Fire extinguisher

Light lubricating oil (e.g., 3-in-One).

String  (I save old shoe laces.)

Glues, Tapes

AC extension cords

Rags

Brush

I like the idea, but honestly, I think you guys are overestimating the average person's DIY abilities. This is a list for everyone, right? I know quite a few people (engineers and engineering students even!) who wouldn't even know what kind of oil to put into their car, much less where it comes out (this is why quick change places are so popular).

The hardest DIY work most will do is change an interior doorknob, or tighten a bolt under the sink. Hanging pictures and decorations, tightening furniture screws, patching drywall holes, and assembling IKEA furniture probably done by most households (but not everyone).

Very true indeed.  I've been to homes where there are very IMO simple fixes that have gone unfixed for years.

True... some people pay a hundred bucks to have a shower head installed
