Sakalike Alert!
on: March 17, 2017, 05:13:34 PM
I took a chance and ordered this SAK-a-like.  It is stamped only with "Germany" on one side of the tang of the main blade and "Rostfrei" on the other.  I've spent a considerable amount of time trying to gain any information on this knife, and the information on this forum has been most useful.  From what I've seen, it's probably made in Solingen but I'm not sure and have no clue of the manufacturer.  I can say this; this knife is in AMAZING shape, I mean, it looks like it was made next year.   Only sign of age is a light patina on the bronze liners. This knife is solid, and with just a drop of oil has a nice, authoritative snap.  The bail, materials, and shape of tools makes me think it is true vintage but I might be wrong.  Does anyone have a dim ray of light to shine on this knife's origins?  All I know is it shipped from Alaska and the ad stated it was from the estate of a knife collector.

Also, I do invite anyone who has a sak-a-like to share, especially these ambiguous ones.  It would be cool to pool our information.

It is in unbelievably good condition.  Not even certain it's Solingen, just plain ole "Germany" .  My first thought was the scales are hard plastic tortoise shell design.  Here's a better to pic to see. I'm not real familiar with horn but it feels and sounds like plastic.  Just measured it and it's a 93mm.  Is that the same size as that yella fella you have?

Could be anything. There are/were many German manufacturers of "sports knives", most of them based in Solingen. It's got me wondering which of them wouldn't stamp their name on the blade, or why. Looks nice!

Do you have any thoughts on estimated year of manufacture?

Post WWII certainly, pre millennium probably. In other words, I don't really know.

The shine on this thing is a little out of control.  It looks like cheesy 80's effects but the pics just turned out this way...  It is a sunny day here...

My Yeller Feller is 90mm (!) and is marked 'INOX ROSTFREI GERMANY' on the balde tang, and 'RALLYE' on the scales. No idea of its background.

All the tools apart from the Stainless blade are carbon steel and are heavily patina'd. It looks like yours are all stainless.

Some German-made 'SAKs'.

Top two are ISC; middle two are Henckels.

Bottom left is a Richartz. Also have a couple of Richartz PIcnics (2nd photo)

Bottom right is is an unknown for Mercedes-Benz, marked Inox/Solingen.

The black Browning (3rd photo) is simply marked 'Made in Germany'.

Here's a pic of my latest SAK-alike.  If one were to use Victorinox rules (from this corkscrew's humble understanding), one would date this knife somewhere between 1942 - 1947, which also included the fall of the 3rd Reich, which makes me want to say it's closer to 42 than 47.   Still a lot to learn.

This knife is around the 90mm mark, only slightly shorter than a Victorinox 91mm. I do not own any Victorinox that date this far back so I've pictured it to the next closest I have which is a a 3 layer w/ scissors and phillips from the '60s a poor comparison, I know but from what I understand, the 84mm and 91mm lengths have stayed constant, designed as the perfect sizes to keep in your pocket)

This knife was made in Solingen which has rich history and reputation as elite blade makers. It's SUPER high quality, has EXCELLENT snap, and weights about +20g compared to modern climber models.

After a lot of searching I have found very little information about Overland and knives like this in general. I do know that they go for pretty cheap on the bay if you should decide you want one.

 :salute:

Edit:  Also wanted to say, it appears this knife has brass liners.  As far as I know, Victorinox used nickel/silver then aluminum.  Does anyone know if they ever used brass on cellidors?

Thanks.

According to Levine's Guide to Knives, Overland was short for Fred Mac Overland, an LA-based importer. The knives were imported from Germany c.a. 1952.

Dang! I gotta get me a Levine's Guide!  Thanks man, I was pretty unclear about it.   So Overland was like a Hoffritz type of thing?  So I wonder who the original manufacturer was

edit:  I've updated the description with this info.  Thanks again CS

'Levine's Guide to Knives and their Values', by Bernard Levine. The 4th edition is the one everyone wants. Unfortunately now rare and pricey. Later editions dropped Levine, while keeping his name on the cover, and substantially reducing the content. Lots of hard feelings over that.
