How to remove oxidation?
on: May 23, 2017, 01:33:02 PM
Hey guys, I have a little problem hoped you guys could help me with. I've got some small oxidation points on my scissors, and they sometimes cause the scissors to stay shut instead of opening back up, and it's really annoying. I was wondering if I should use a metal file to remove the oxidation, or is that too aggressive?
I'm not sure if you'll be able to see it, but here's some photos:

I don't really see what you mean

Are you sure it is oxidation? Isn't it sticky residue from tape or something like that?
In that case a little cleaning with dish soap and new oil afterwards would do the trick.

Well, it's brown... Probably has some tape residue, but I'm sure it's not brown.

1+. Even if you know it is oxidation try scrubbing it first.

Use tooth paste to clean it. If it's oxydation, I don't know if Coca-Cola can remove (it might bee too aggressive).

Toothpaste will remove minor rust, go to a metal polish like flitz for more aggressive polishing.

To remove dirt or oxidation I tend to use a Stainless Steel rubbing filt.
It's a little coarse so it can rub off all unwanted stuff, but not to much to scratch the steel.

I don't see the problem, but I believe you.  You might try a mild polishing compound like Flitz or Mother's Mag Wheel Polish.  Apply with a Q-tip and polish the affected surfaces.  These products are very mild, so you don't have to worry about doing harm, yet they will remove surface issues and nicely polish them.  Try not to get the polish into the pivot, where it will be a little difficult to remove.

Very good suggestions offered.  I really like mothers mag wheel polish if you can get it.  Try using 0000 Steel wool or even a product called Goof Off with a rag.  Good luck.

Carefull now!

If your steel wool is sensitive to rust, you might end up rubbing particles of it inside your stainless tool, if rubbed to thorough, causing it to show rust spots itself.

A glass ceramic cleaner would also clean the rust.
And a body polish surely too.
Polish, not wax

A couple drops of oil and some fine steel wool generally work for me.

Won't soaking in vinegar for 20 minutes get rid of it?

I never experimented much to solve this issue since soaking in WD-40 always solved it for me for both pliers and scissors issues.

I'm sure other guys here can give better advise, but if it is some glue residue from tape or something, when ever i get tape glue residue from cutting boxes or something on my sak's i'll just scrub the tools with dish washing soap and some green Scotch-Brite for the dishes and it works fine and clean :salute:
