It's a toss up.
on: October 08, 2008, 03:23:15 AM
Ok, today, just messin around at work, one of our guys grabbed a pair of pliers and bent a penny in half and folded it over.  I then took my Wave out and used the wire cutters to cut this folded up penny in half, and the Wave cut it with no problem.  No damage done to the plier jaws or to the wire cutter edges.  I was very impressed with the Wave's performance, and it made me think of something.  While I no longer completely trust Leatherman tools (since three different class of tool have broken on me), I have to admit, certain aspects of them are as tough as they some.  One thing I never liked about my Swisstool is that, although the tools appear beefier then the SAK pocket knives, they still have that same, soft steel that all SAKs are made of, and they do bend and twist.  My Swisstool's wire cutters bent and dented cutting through a chain link fence.  My Wave sliced through that very same fence.  I have bent ST drivers on stubborn screws, yet have torqued and torqued on the Wave's drivers with nary a scratch.  It's like the LM tools inside the multitools are made for real use, while the ST's tools... not so much.  While I DO love my ST, and prefer Victorinox tools over LM, this is an issue for me.
What to do?

that's easy, get em both! :P

I really think both have good things going for them and wouldn't hesitate on either company.
If you can't get both and one excels for you, for the things you need, get that.

But I'm very happy to have them both out there, and being a nut I want them all! :D

A lot of people here find themselves torn between aspects of different tools, though there are a few that have managed to find their holy grail...  ;)

Maybe you should try a Surge or Core? Then you'd still have the LM tools but in a size closer to the SwissTool.

But if you look at it this way, the Swisstool tool's will bend rather than snap, leaving you with a still functional tool :)
Give in, buy several Farmer's!!!!!!

Yay, Rusty Leatherman Tools are harder than soft stainless Swisstool tools.

Suckers.

The LM tools are far stronger than Vic's IMO.  I would never torque down hard with my swisstool drivers as I would worry about damage, but I never worry when using a LM.
I'm back!!

You still got to remember however. Every tool will not work in every situation. Besides the LM or Vic are just a tool to "get by" with. It in not ment to replace a tool box.

That's not what the guy in the shop said.

I was stoked!

I can replace my whole toolkit for a hundred quid, and it'll fit in my pocket!

From a metallurgical point of vew, more rust resistance means softer metal (higher nickel content) while less rust resistance means harder and more rigid (higher carbon content).  How do you bend a tool back so it fits neatly back into the tool?

I won't worry about damaging either as they both have outstanding warranties. ::)

My PST cutters barely work,

but then, I used them to cut 2-3mm stainless wire on a regular basis (often not bothering with the "hard wire" notch)

Now I just use them for 1/2mm tie-wire & such.

Well you can send them in for work, but if they still do the job I would just run with it.
