The 2017 111mm slide lock to liner lock change
on: April 10, 2017, 12:52:23 AM
Hellow guys. I've read the other day about the 2017 catalogue, and a lot of discontinued models in 2017 and changes are happening.

If I understood it right, and considering the change they already made in the website, the slide locks are now extinct and now all locking blades are liner locks.

Did anybody else notice this?

Now the Outrider is almost the perfect trekking/bushcraft SAK in my opinion, it only lacks one hand action on that blade and a nail file so I don't have to bring my Wenger Esquire (fixing bad nails so you can keep trekking!). I was thinking about getting the Ranger for this because it has the file, but the size is not optimal for harder work. Right now I'm trying to love my Soldier '08 with the Esquire combo but bigger scissors in a single unit makes my wallt uncomfortable with all those remaining bills... As a ultralight backpacker I would like a Huntsman with a nail file instead of the Ranger. Man, don't we all wish we could design and name an official SAK release?

Yes please - to designing and releasing my own sak!

I've been watching the slide lock to liner lock change closely due to preferring the liner lock and the strong locking bottle opener that comes with it. I'll take them any day over the slide lock.

In this new world... I agree on the Outrider. I also would much like it to be one handed; and I wouldn't say no to the nailfile either - the shape is great for a lot of uses besides nails. If I had to drop something it would be the saw to lose weight  - such seems evil given I used the saw on rogue small gum trees while mowing yesterday.

It doesn't look like the liner lock variants are anywhere near common yet... waiting for the first reviews... :)

Someone once recommended me the Evolution 23, but it is 85mm. It has a loupe, nail file, saw, locking knife, tweezers, scissors... Perfect for the woods (and the added loupe can start a fire in a sunny day, I guess), but I would have to test it to see if is able to cut a branch and carve wood in such a small size. I guess 111mm is the way to go. I would love the nail file/hook combo from the Compact in all models with 3 or more tools on the back.

But I don't understand why the 111mm models only have a maximum of 2 tools on the back, maybe because of the locking blade/bottle opener?

I'm not a fan of the thick models because I like ultralight carries and I love the idea of carrying only the tools I find useful (even if I just save like 20 grams), also thick models don't feel great on the hand when using the tools. But then I'm always debating the small disagreements I have with the intermediate models. I wonder if Vic repair shops will do a custom tool exchange for me  :o

I agree with this, if the new Outrider had the one hand blade and the metal file/saw instead of the wood saw, I think it could be the perfect 111mm.  :salute:

The OH Locksmith comes pretty close to a nice EDC 111 for me....

I think this change is long overdue. I'm buying a liner lock Outrider and Skipper the moment they are available...
