Knowing a bit more about you than than most folks here Dave, I would say that the fact that you are still here and standing after everything that has happened to you is absolute proof that you have nothing to be ashamed of.  And, I've spoken to you on the phone, and I can honestly say that while you may stutter sometimes, it's well worth the wait to hear what you have to say.

And it's not that bad- if folks figure that's a reason not to listen to you, that's their loss, not yours.

I'm proud to know you man.

Thanks buddy! Appreciate the kind words.  My mom was asking the other day how long we've known each other.  I say 15 years or close to it, am I close? Before multitool.org I even was a reporter for a small gaming publication online and went to e3 a few times and interviewed some game designers.  I can say I've done a lot in spite of things and have overcome myself and the stigmas associated with being labeled.

Its interesting the idea of success for many is directly related to money.

I agree with this in principle. But practical experience has rather brutally beaten it into my skull that a lack of both liquid and real assets does directly lead to misery.

I would say that a man is successful when he is able to live a life that allows him to provide for the needs of himself and his family, with the ability to help his friends and neighbors. Such a life means that he is able to be self sufficient, and to keep an eye to the future. When you can not have the means to have a future, then you are only your past. And your present becomes a sick joke when your idea of "long range plans" is three months. I've been living that way for too damn long.

There's an article about this somewhere where they surveyed people who were rich, middle class, etc. . Like it takes a certain income level to be happy ( which I think they meant not starving, can go out etc. ) but happiness will peak at a certain dollar amount and won't increase past that. So like if you make more than $100,000/yr. doesn't necessarily make you happier.

The poll needs a 'Yes, and I don't care what anybody else thinks of me' option.

Voters feel successful. But few people voted.
I only had a single goal in life (succeeded on that), but this goal initiated a chain reaction of goals, on personal, family and employment levels. I succeeded on them too, up to now.
Since my forties, when children grew up, I set new personal goals: to enjoy things I wanted since I was a kid but I didn't have the knowledge, the money or the time to enjoy. Books, records, telescopes, binoculars, toy soldiers, SAKs, multitools etc, even toys such as my Meccano, most of them were accumulated, played with and enjoyed this last decade, at the same time we had to survive a nationwide financial crisis and our work hours doubled (for less money and greater taxes). I succeeded in that too, mainly because I was more experienced and focused (I don't mind having the same iPhone for 5 years and laptop for 10 years and I didn't pay a cent for them, they were presents).
Still, my first goal is what makes me feel successful. I lived the Great Love in my lifetime, and still do.

42, got a highly stressful job as an AV Project Manager. My install team lost a 400 dollar drill and pair of Milwaukee tin snips today .  :ahhh   Pays a lot but demands a lot. Got laid off from that big blue electronic chain store last year. Lucked into this.

Got a wife, house, yard, 2 dogs. Life's not bad right now. Holy hell , having a yard and house is a lot of work!

Most people would say no.

I say yes. My own extended family thinks I'm wasting my potential. I don't care.

I'm 25, married to my best friend for the last 3 years. Shes the love of my life and the very best decision I've ever made. I work in an IT job that is fun and I'm able to gravitate to my strengths and enjoy my job. (Hardware and Network Security)  I love IT and I don't make a lot of up in Nor Cal. But I wouldn't trade this area because I could be making more in the Bay Area or Southern California. I also work as a youth pastor and though my wife and I desire children that hasn't happened yet we have 15 bright and awesome junior highers and high school students we hang out with and influence (I hope) in a positive way. I love my life and wouldn't change a darn thing. Yes more money would be nice but at this point I could care less. My one goal is to get out of the debt I'm in.

Cheers.

My mind has changed a lot over the last couple years and I would rather be judged successful with my family and relationships than by money. Money comes and goes friends and family don't.

Yes - I achieved my SAK collecting goal

Which is ..... All the tool variations according to SAAMS or this spready
Well all except the square Phillips without a file and without a can key !! I think that version exists.
Hmm - Well OK I don't have the lighter or spatula either (well not in 91mm) - Bending the rules of my 'success'  you see :o

Although not too_oooo successful either as:
  • It wasn't that hard  ???
  • My collection is pretty pitiful compared to many here  :(

Yes, partially and no ....

Work wise, I have been in work at the same steelworks (through 4 owners) since I left school in 1989.  I have completed further education while working to achieve the promotions I sought out, and after a recent closure of the mill I worked at, I am comfortable in my current job after having a steep learning curve. So I'd say that's a success.

Heath wise, I successfully learned to walk again (albeit with a walking stick) after breaking my back and damaging my spinal cord.  Not something I'd like to go through again, and it would be nice to have feeling back in my left leg, bum cheek and left spud, and full feeling back in my right leg, but all things considered it's better than being on wheels with no working legs, which is where I very nearly ended up.  So all in all I'd say it a partial success. I'm still kicking and that's what counts, right?.

Personal life wise , lets just say happily single and leave it at that. Not successful in that regard I think.

But overall I'm happy in and with life, what more can you ask for eh??

hmm pain free would be nice, and that shiny new sak set for 2017, and a firebox stove, and and.... well what is life without a few dreams and hopes  :D

Thank you

Broke L5 and damaged L4 and S1. I got hit from behind when out on my motorbike in 2006 (the day after I picked it up brand new). I cracked 3 vertebra but they said they would knit. It turned out L5 didn't and the crack propagated slowly until it split in 2012, twisting out on line allowing my spinal cord to be trapped and damaging L4 and S1 in the process, and dropped me like a sack of spuds.  It was Tuesday June 5th straight after the Queens Jubilee holiday weekend. A scary time I can tell you. No idea how the cord wasn't cut. They gave me a 65% chance of ending up in a wheel chair when I went into surgery.  When I came out of surgery and the tests said I should be ok, I put everything I had into getting back onto my feet and returned to work on light duties 6 months later. I got feeling back slowly over the following years but still can't feel a lot of my left leg, my left bum cheek or my left spud, and I can't detect sharp pain in my right leg like when you get stuck with a pin (which is how they test it).

All because a 18 year old lad in his mums car was in a rush to get home to see the 2nd half of the football
