My daughter's Scouts kit.
on: April 11, 2017, 10:49:06 PM
With my daughter starting Scouts at the end of last year she's been getting more enthusiastic about camping.  With that in mind and with a cracking little tinder kit from Smashie as the basis I decided to put together her "Scouts Fire Kit" and extras.

So what's in the box I hear you ask?

Breaking it down we have:

Fatwood
hemp/jute cord
waxed cotton balls
Magnesium
lolly sticks
Ferro rod and striker
Fresnel magnifier
Victorinox signal mirror (in zip lock bag)
mini compass
Opinel Junior Outdoor

I'll add a mini Bic lighter at some point I suspect but I'm open to suggestions.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

If you are adding a lighter then perhaps matches in a waterproof container with a striker :tu:

that's a good point.  I'm pushing it for space but I should be able to fit them in.

Cheers mate, It really is a little cracker.  My daughter and I have agreed that we can "share" it. :D  She actually likes the idea of her Opinel more, but as a practical knife for her to use I think she'll definitely get more out of the Eldris.

Pretty kewl! Only thing I might add is a small pair of scissors and maybe tweezers. Taken from a Classic or Swisscard.

I think its great she has 2 blades in that kit  :tu:.

I'm guessing 1st aid/booboo kit is already something she'll have on her?

Cheers everyone.  I've already crammed in another couple of bits of the fatwood and added a compact Clipper lighter.  Now fit to bursting at the seams.

Yes, "booboo" kit is packed separately. :D

Looks good G, through my testing over the last couple of months the UCO Storm proof Matches came out as pick of the bunch  :salute:

Great kit  :tu:

If you're adding a mini Bic a strip of bike inner tube is great to go with it.  You can use it as a fire lighter in really wet conditions.  Though with fatwood and waxed cotton balls she probably won't need it.

I sent Gareth some extra fatwood and boy does it burn well  :tu:

That's a very good point. :tu:  I've used inner tube to start fires in the dead of winter when everything is frozen and nothing else wanted to burn.

I'll vouch for the UCO matches too. They're much more reliable than the cheaper alternatives you can pick up at WalMart and the like. And they make a pretty nice waterproof canister for the matches, if you're not too short on space.
