How to sharpen
on: October 13, 2008, 10:43:13 PM
Ladies and gents,

If like me you are fed up of fighting the old sharpening stones can I recommend to you the Lansky sharpening system.

Got mine about two days ago and have used it on several knives and got them shaving sharp.

This is a VERY good bit of kit considering I got mine on hellbay for less then £30.

With it came the oil, knife clamp and extra coarse, coarse, medium, fine and ceramic ultra fine stones with their holders in a convenient plastic carry case the size of an old walkman.

Get one, you wont regret it,

 :salute:

I've read more testimonials for the Sharpmaker! but if it works he's covered ;)

I personally am getting back to stones, I like being able to do it "the old fashion way"
and I have a belt sander too, but stones you can use anywhere. I'm getting better.
judge others by how they treat those they are allowed to mistreat

I tried DMT's "Magna-Guide" system which IMO is pretty much the same setup as Lansky's. I honestly wanted it to work. It did.  :P  However, I didn't like the amount of play in the whole guide/clamp-and-rod setup so I returned it. I've been using a belt sander now and getting very, very satisfactory results. If the Lansky system works for you then that's very cool. You definitely should feel confident in your sharpening system/setup.

I have got to get a sharpening system soon.  I have looked into the Lansky as although it can be fiddly, it seems that there is less chance of messing the edge up than on the Sharpmaker.  The Lansky appears to be able to sharpen duller knives to.

Anyone used a Gatco sharpener?  They work the same way as a Lansky, but have larger stones.
I'm back!!

I've got a Sharpmaker and it works just fine. I haven't tried any of the others to do a comparison, but it does seem to take care of everything I need at least.

I used to come here a lot.

I went the other direction. Started with a Lansky, went to an EdgePro, then went to just stones. I like not having to rely on anything other than my hands and some stones to sharpen my knives. I like to "simplify" my life when possible.

This is no slam on folks who like Sharpmakers, Lansky, EdgePro's, etc, etc, etc. Just my personal preference is all.

Mike,

No probs mate, I am happy to use a stone but for "defining" a blade , or repairing a badly damaged one I need some help and the lansky does just that. :D

Jock,

The lansky managed a 11" machete OK.  Any bigger than that and you may need to doe the blade bit by bit...but for my largest blade it worked a treat.

Hope this helps,

Nick

The trouble I found with the Lansky was the blade kept moving in the clamp when sharpening a heavy Multitool like a Swisstool or Supertool . I find the sharpmaker so easy to use . Ben you cant mess the edge up mate . Just be carefull when you sharpen near the tip as you can round off the point if your careless . If you get one I'll go into depth over the phone with you if you like .

FWIW, I just bought a Sharpmaker for my buddy's birthday present. If it's as good as everyone says it is I may have to get one. My excuse for forgoing the belt sander is I can take the Sharpmaker anywhere. Kinda hard to do with a belt sander.  :o :D

Sharpmaker works wonders for my knives, my only comparison to other sharpening method is the sharpening stone which is like comparing a bike from an airplane. Happy as a beaver with my sharpmaker.
Multitools are the best thing that happened to mankind since the invention of the wheel!
