Whetstone 1000/3000.
on: May 26, 2017, 10:01:34 PM
I finally picked up a whetstone.  I decided to get a combination stone and settled on a 1000/3000.  I almost went with 1000/6000 but since I have a few stropping compounds plus some diamond spray thats actually not bad I decided 3000 was a better choice.

Now I wont BS and say I got this because the reviews even though they were good.  I got it cause the price was $20 and supposedly it was a lifetime warranty.  If I wear it out they'll replace it, though I wonder what shipping would be?

I'm getting ahead since I've only just got it.

I inspected it for any defects,  it was sent pristine.  I let it soak as directed and commenced to testing it out.  I first tried it on my SOG Snarl, then some knife a friend wanted sharpened, and finally my Mora.

I have no clue what the stone is made of.  Its made in Japan as stated on the box.

I must also say I am no stranger to whetstones as this was my method when I was a chef.

It was not an expensive stone but my knives never suffered sharpness.

This stone so far has performed on par for what was paid.  The 440 steel on the friends knife and 9cr13mov were easily re beveled and brought to hair popping sharpness.  My Mora is ( carbon steel ) and was even easier to get silly sharp.

I've got some harder steels that in time I'll try the whetstone out on but for now I am pleased.

I didnt take many pictures but will in time.  All my edges are I great shape as of now but I do have a blade or two that I can fool with.

King dual stone 1000/6000 had some great reviews it wasn't terribly more either.   The King Deluxe 1000 was another I was looking at but I really wanted a dual.

I dont have a problem polishing the edge so 6000 for me wasn't needed.

In the end I just wanted a cheap reliable stone TBH.  I feel thus far the stone worked for me and on the steels I tested it out on.  Will it cut S30V?  I have A2 and O1 that I will try it on at some point but I keep those edges stropped and thus far they haven't needed much.

I have VG10 that I'm sure will not be a struggle.

My kitchen knives all have been set ( bevel ) with my Lansky so steeling and stropping has kept them in great shape.

Very cool Aloha :like: I have always wanted one of those but I have enough sharpening gear to last a few lifetimes now  I may still get one someday though :D

I had a very old very (dished) stone.  I had used oil on it and over the years it really needed to be tossed.  I tossed it years back and never replaced it.  I looked at more expensive stones and debated back and forth and forth and back again.  I just pulled the trigger on this one and happy I did.

I've managed to get by over the years and while my gear isn't high end I believe my edges are more than sufficient.  My kitchen knives are used daily and never suffer dull edges.

My outdoor knives have all been maintained and are all very sharp.

SAKs and MTs all sport hair popping edges.

So for me it was simply one more layer to what my set up.
