Custom SAK
on: July 29, 2017, 04:56:37 AM
Hey all. Does anyone know of anybody i could hire to mod a 93mm alox knife? I have all three SAKs required for the build, but am just having trouble finding someone who could do the Mod. I would attempt it myself, but really do not want to mess up. I am thinking (just thinking, mind you) of joining the SAKMC if I can figure out a way to get this built. I am not sure what i am looking at as far as price goes so we will have to see if i can even afford it. I know that Syph no longer does alox mods, and tattoosteve is not currently taking orders. Thanks for any input!!!

Im looking for something like this as far as tool layout:

Tools dont need to be stonewashed or anything like that since I'm sure that makes the price go up. I have a Pioneer X for the blade, scissors, openers, and awl. An explorer for the screwdriver, and an OC farmer for the saw and scales. I'd like the scales to have torx screws instead of rivets.

I would contact Syph via PM, last I heard he is still doing 93mm mods. I sent him the parts for 2 different customs, one was a 93mm and he did a fantastic job with it. I sent the whole knives with the tools I needed and parts and he did the rest using his pivot system and resizing of the tool pivot holes. He is probably swamped with orders now vs. the old days, but it would be worth the wait IMO even if he's backed up with orders. Couldn't hurt to ask anyway.  :salute:

Drop Hiraethus a PM. He might be able to help you out if you can't find anyone to assist on that side of the puddle.

Good of you to think of me, Al.  I'm not doing any mods at the moment, let alone for other people - I just don't have the workspace that I used to.  Once we've moved (to our own house - we're currently renting) I'll start up again if I can.

Good luck finding a modder, gdoolittle - I hope you can get what you want from someone.

Thanks for the input everyone! Syph was actually the first person I contacted and he told me he no longer did alox. I responded telling him i allready had parts if it made a difference and i dont think he has seen it yet. I dont want to push him too hard i know he is probably super busy.

Looks like he's on a different course nowadays, maybe ask him for suggestions?

Surely there's enough info on MTO for you to attempt it yourself if you wanted to try. I think the hard part is drilling the holes in the tools bigger to accept the torx pivots, IIRC they are 1/8", and then sizing the pivots takes some doing also to get the tension right. I have never tried, only a few 91's and 111's...

Syph doesn't do alox anymore? Sheesh... I have two of his from years ago, but I was hoping for another. Oh well.

Unfortunately, drilling through hardened stainless steel is beyond the reach of most DIYers You really need a proper drill press in good shape with low enough speed, several carbide drill bits, and a good cutting fluid/coolant. Otherwise you are really just going to break a bunch of drill bits and waste a lot of time and money.

Trust me, I tried to cheap out with widening the pivots, using a hand drill, HSS bits, and WD40 & olive oil for cutting fluid. It was difficult, and the results frankly sucked. 0/10 wouldn't recommend.

I'd like to bump this thread one more time if I may just in case someone didn't see it. I just dont know if I have the time/correct tools to do this on my own and I dont want to shortcut it. If i did do it on my own, it would be similar to what Jaya did with his pivots.
