Vic hook weight rating
on: July 30, 2017, 11:32:23 PM
Question:

I've seen that the Victorinox hook is rated for 200 lbs, but this surprises me.  What is bearing the load these?  On my models, for example the climber, the hook hangs off a brass pin.  That brass pin has two other back tools.  The pin doesn't go through any steel backsprings.  So the hook only goes through the aluminum liners.  Are the aluminum liners bearing the weight then?  My understanding was that aluminum was fairly soft.  For example one can deform the liners by over-torqueing the corkscrew.  So how does this work?

I haven't tested mine(and I don't want to.  ), but the aluminium liners are stronger with regards to the lateral(?) force generated by a loaded hook than the twisting force generated by the corkscrew or (more likely) the backside philips.

Properties of metal.
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

Not sure I could carry a 200 lb. package with one hand anyway.

The more fun way to test it is to hang your own body weight from the hook and see if you can't break it!

Careful!  :D
200 lbs is the weight that the hook can support if there is no jerking(sudden motion) going on.
If there is jerking, the hook won't support 200 lbs.  :)

All hail the hook!

Wouldn't that be a fun test to make bets on what would fail.  Al liners, brass pin, or steel hook?

I would bet on the brass pin.  I think it would pull its head right through the Al liner as the head formed on that back pin is small.

Wait or would that be the Al liner failing if it failed to hold its hole size to hold the pin back.

I dont have a bunch of weights to test systematically, but what about using a come along or chain winch to pull one apart to see where it fails... that could work.  Hmmm

Then a brass pin vs. stainless pivot.

Then aluminum liners vs. brass vs. nickel.

Then alox vs. titanium handles.

Could get costly.  :D

You can try jerking, too. Just keep in mind it can break your hook...

Im sure it holds alot.  Start rotating your body if you want it to fail fast.  :D  We need to test one to failure though to learn what will fail.  I have lots of new in box SAKs I can use.  They are all to be taken apart anyway.

If you made a youtube video testing one or more hooks to their failure point I would watch the socks off of that!  :like:

That would be too pragmatic, Syph. How about a Zip line over a small canyon or river with a 150-200lb person.  Now that would be the test...    :ahhh
