Swisstool Bit Holder Mod, In Progress
on: August 07, 2017, 12:32:03 AM
As requested here is an idea I'm working on.  A 1/4" direct drive bit holder for the Swisstool line.
This started as just a magnetic bit holder for the Plus ratchet.  I love the ratchet and extension Vic offers as a plus to the Swisstool line but when applying downward pressure on the ratchet with the OEM extension the extension sticks out the back of the ratchet and diggs into the palm of the hand.  Just a LITTLE uncomfortable.  The extension is sometimes to long and some driver bits are not grooved around the sides so they fall out because there is no magnet in Vic's extension.  A regular bit holder added to the ratchet solves the lenght and magnet problem but makes the "diggs in" worse.  So stick that bit holder backwards into a drill and use the Hack Saw on the Swisstool to cut off what sticks out of the ratchet and the use the corner of the file to groove it so it will stay in the ratchet.  Of corse that's with a bungi cord pulled tight on the drill trigger and the body of the drill in a vise for two handed control of the hacksaw and file.  Problem solved.  Well almost.  Now in order for it to fit back in the red bit carrier a little triming must be done with the Swisstool blade.
So here is the end result.

Now Part 2
I've been happily using the previous set up for several years now, but got to wondering if there was a way to attach a bit holder to the Swisstool itself on my way home from a weekend call out job today.  Some thing kinda like what Leatherman came out with for their early tools.  So I got to playing with what I had already made and found that if I added a second groove on two opposite sides of the already modded bit holder in just the right place it would fit into the spring catch on the plier head of my '05 Swisstool and almost lock in perfectly.  Notice I said almost.
It locks in well and dose not twist any but currently there is some side to side wobble that won't work for any real use.  I think I have a solution and will be testing it soon.  Also as stated in the thread https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,73356.0.html that prompted this, I found out older models don't have the same spring catch point on their pliar head designs so that problem must also be resolved.  On positive note what I have now works flawlesly on both of my Spirits.
