Spartan Knife

Thought I'd whoop it up a bit for the humble Spartan! I've owned one with blue scales for about five years since winning it in a raffle at of all things, an air rifle shooting competition    It was and is my first and only SAK. I thought it was a bit of a joke initially, but I love it now. I'm really impressed with the edge I can put on the blades, the smallest of which I have used for all sorts of weird jobs, and the screw drivers have uses only limited by ones imagination. Oh yeah the toothpick is great too... needs a new one soon! It's a great penknife.

What do you call a Spartan with a Saw? ('nother layer) (camper, now I know)

Turns out I'm an idiot and the Spartan has a corkscrew under than name.

So what do you call a spartan with a Phillips?

I change my vote to Tinker.

Everything in that family is good though (It gets a bit suss with Cybertools and Altimeters, but I'm a simple man)

(Also, for my own interests sake, the '08 Soldier is basically a cracked up Hiker. Eh.)

I don't want to be the smug git with a pocket knife, but it is kinda annoying when the best people can do is misuse their car keys.

I already firmly believe everyone should Possess a Classic (Ideally SD, but I'm pretty loose on that front), the next step is certainly an 84 or 91mm 2 Layer SAK.

If I can get my hands on a Small Tinker* with Mauve scales, it's a shoe-in for the next gift-day.


*I seem to swing both ways when it comes to Phillips vs Corkscrew, both certainly have their place, and give you a great feeling when you've chosen the right option, and a terrible feeling when you've chosen the wrong one!

 A Spartan with Plus scales,and a mini-driver tucked in the corkscrew is a great urban EDC.

The Spartan is a great minimalist SAK.  I carried nothing but a Spartan for years, and it always served me well.  I lost that knife, bought a Cadet II to replace it, then joined SOSAK soon after that.  That was the beginning of the end....   

The only Spartan I own now is the "Shining Light" custom that Rotokid made for a SOSAK mod contest.  The GITD shield for that knife can be seen in my avatar.  It's in the center of the picture below:

whats the best one to get?

A spartan is good....but what about a Camper? or a   ? or combine them both for a Hunstman.

Perhaps you enjoy the phillips path, how about a Super or Deluxe Tinker?

Perhaps you want pliers, a Mechanic is good...
or a file? you need a mountaineer...


Get them all, just to be safe.

Yep there's a lot to be said for the humble Spartan

I really don't think I could ever EDC a SAK with no wood saw. It just... defeats the purpose. 


Oh, and recently I started to understand the Leatherman fans' gripe with Vic polishing - whenever I try to use the flathead as a chisel, I just end up digging for my Fuse...

On the saw front I can get you.  It's not a must for me but it is a big added bonus.

As to the flathead well, it's a screwdriver and um....not a chisel.

I do know what you are talking about I think,  to be honest it would take a moment or two to square up the end of the driver to get what you want.  I might well have a go myself.
