Need Help Reassembling ST300
on: August 22, 2017, 04:39:26 AM
So I disassembled a ST300 to clean out a bunch of rust.  (It was an ebay buy.)  Like a total dope, I was not careful about keeping track of which washers go where.

There appear to be four washers made of brass (?) instead of steel.  Does anyone know if these go with the plier pivots?

Typically in Leatherman tools, the phosphor bronze washers are for the plier pivots or the OHO tools on the plier pivots.

You should be able to confirm that by the diameter of the hole. If it fits on the larger diameter plier pivot, then that's where it goes.

Ahh....okay...did not even realize pivot sizes were different.  Have not begun to reassemble, it is soaking in vinegar.  Thanks for the tip.

Couple more things to add.
In the pic above, the two detent washer parts next to the posts aren't orientated like the other parts, they should be flipped over.
The small washers and the posts are keyed, match the flats up, don't just force them on.

Thanks guys.
I have a few like that but they are messy and often out of focus because they were only going to be quick reference pics for me.
Should really have put the effort in and done them properly.

:like: That pic is going to come in handy when I start modding mine - I think I might try to do a write-up :tu:

When I was still lurking it struck me that the 300 seemed (a) very versatile, but not terminally so, and (b) eminently modifiable. Watch this subforum for more as the parts I ordered start coming in...   :mail:
Cheers!

Oh man, this picture was the only thing that told me that I was missing a fourth washer. After some careful search I was lucky enough to find it on the bathroom floor under the bathmat.    what an idiot.

Don't feel to bad, you aren't the first and won't be the last to loose a washer  :D

Got it reassembled thanks to zoidberg.  Wish I had taken before pictures -- it was basically rusted shut.  Now the handles look like new, and most tools look new.  Some pitting here and there (stupid Leatherman bead blast).  But it looks great.  Handles are still wobbly, it isn't that easy to tighten the plier pivots when you are using pliers in both hands.  Thanks for the help guys.

So, is it settled science that the polished tools such as those on the PST and Surge have better rust resistance than bead blasted one's like the ST300 or the Blast? Or is it still considered anecdotal, such as in this particular anecdote?

Pretty much! Take two pieces of the same steel, and the polished one will get attacked slower than the bead blasted one.
