EDC related guessing game with modest GAW
on: August 24, 2017, 08:30:27 AM
What is the object in the picture?

The poster who guesses correctly AND needs or wants this will get it for free (shipping via snail mail included)!

I do require a considerable level of detail though, especially as regards how it would be carried and the purpose of the vaguely rectangular part at the bottom of the pic (the clip at the top is more universal). And this pic is all you get , together with the following hints: the largest dimension in a Cartesian coordinate system is pretty much exactly 6 cm and the object is made of 3D-printed black ABS.

Enjoy!

:-\  Not quite sufficient ... which thingy?

Edit: note the rectangular recess starting at the bottom's far end and reaching about to its centre. There is a corresponding recess on the inside of the opposite (upper) wall.

Is it a belt carrier designed to hold a SAK at the top and a plier based multitool at the bottom?

Slowly getting warmer... need at least the tool name. The top clip, as said, is more universally applicable e.g. to pens, small torches/flashlights, possibly SAKs of the right size although I don't own one that fits exactly.

OK, after an initial period to resolve possible issues: in order to make this clearer, as well as open to the entire globe as it rotates under the sun, I am now instituting some boundary conditions:

- The game will be open until tomorrow  Friday 25 August 2017 at 08:00 CEST. Entries generated after that time (or its same-time counterpart in other time zones) will not be taken into account.
- No more hints from me, I think I've given you enough already.

The decision on who won will be taken shortly after closure. These rules apply:
1. The first poster coming closest to the name of the plier based multitool that goes into the rectangular sliding compartment wins
2. In case the exact name has not been guessed and there is a draw between two or more posters coming substantially equally close, a random choice will be made. Probably by blindly drawing pieces of paper with the names of the contenders.
3. The winner may decide to forfeit his prize and designate another forum member who gives prior assent and is willing to reveal their address details for having the object sent.

Good luck, all!

Upon review of the rules I have had to make some adjustments as rules 1 and 2 were partly contradictory. Please note the new wording of Rules 1 and 2. Sorry, it's my first GAW and I'm feeling my way into this...

Rule 1 was amended to prevent contenders simply repeating earlier posts. It might seem a bit unfair to some contenders in continents that will only see the sun in a while though, but unfortunately I can't avoid that with a GAW which is based on a picture and not only on luck. Apologies for that - I'll try to compensate if possible.

Don't sweat it, man. It's already pretty cool you're setting up a GAW.

I have done several GAWs now and still mess the rules up sometimes

Thanks for the GAW and does a LM Rebar fit in it :tu: Also thanks for the chance  :like:

Without prejudice to the final judgement, I would contend that Mjolnir is rather representative of a hammer-based multitool, not of a plier-based one.  ;)

And the Oscar, sorry, Object goes to...

glenfiddich1983 !

Congratulations! Please PM me your address details so that the Object can find its way through the maze of international mail services to the correct destination.

A little bit of history: this was one of the first designs I made a couple of years ago for my then brand new 3D-printer. The intention was to avoid cluttering my main pockets with such urban EDC things as a LM Squirt and either a small pen or (at night) a Mag Solitaire LED (see picture). I have carried it on my belt and it works perfectly. The pen I used was a Lamy Pico which is about the size of the Solitaire in retracted mode; it expands telescopically for use, thereby exposing the writing end. Pretty nifty, really.

Then several things happened, mostly to do with an unplanned expansion of my Urban EDC arsenal to include a Vic Minichamp, which, as can be clearly seen below, was feeling left out. Another factor was the discovery of the trend for fifth pockets on jeans cut trousers (which I favour) to slowly grow to a size which accommodates more than just a small lighter or pocket watch. And the Minichamp made the separate pen, which found little use, somewhat unnecessary...

This made my belt clip obsolete. On the other hand, having been designed in generous proportions to allow heavy and enduring use, I thought it was too good to throw away. Then I thought of the guessing game, and this evolved into the miniGAW. I hope the new owner will find it as useful as I did.

I may yet design a new one with more carrying capacity, but one of the constraints remains that it should not disturb me e.g. while sitting at a desk or driving, yet remain within view and easy reach.

Perhaps you could design it so that the bottom rail can be adjusted up or down to suit any sized MT.

Nice idea! However, I could probably design something slidable but not actually manufacture it with the required precision... and even if I could (think of purloining parts from a phone clamp?), with a wide tool I'd invade the space between my belt and the pockets with something rather hard which would disturb me when sitting or prevent access to the pockets. Anyway, the fifth pocket will do for now (maybe lined with something like a leather sleeve)...
