Loose handles on TTi
on: August 30, 2017, 01:14:36 PM
Beginning to lose hope on these TTi:s...
3rd broken tool going on and warranty didnt do anything.

With these my problem is loose handles, is there a way to make them tighter?
My pliers are tighter than the handles so the tool is impossible to use. Maybe I could weld some extra material so they would stick open and close? The tool is of course cleaned and dissambled maybe 100 times now. Any ideas?

These new Leathermans are so bad....
They should focus more...

Having had your unit dissambled this many times have you left out a couple spacers when reassembling.

No 1st hand experience with your model, yet all the new LM MTs I have taken in of late, Wave, 2-Rebars, Skeletool, and an OHT, these all required some loosing of pivot screws to make functional to my liking, and open and closing breaking excersices.
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

Different situation, but when I found a second hand Kick, the handles opened easily enough, but the plier head pivot was rusted, so the pliers wouldn't open.
The problem was amplified by the folding nature of the tool. If I tried to open the plier head, the handles would simply close.  :ahhh
You can imagine the amount of WD-40 required and a vise and a prying tool.  :ahhh :ahhh

Anyway,  :b2t:  :D
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

Not knowing the type of work you do specifically but if the broken pliers (and I know it has been several  ) are work related then I would get some linesman pliers or some that are specifically suited to your type of work  LM are designed to have a tool at hand when you aren't expected to use a tool and need one but if you are expected to be using pliers day in and day out then a dedicated set would seem more rugged and more economical  :tu:

Also I don't really know why the tool is loose  I know you would expect a tool as expensive as the Charge to do anything and not tear up but as I said that really aren't designed for that hard of use but that is just my 2 pennies worth and YMMV :salute: :tu:

Not sure I fully understand the issue here, is it that the plier head is over peened? Is it like Pablo described, where even if you nip up the pivots, the arms are folding before the pliers open?

Leatherman's quality is not going to get any better, so if you are to stick with the TTI, you need to come up with a way to expedite wear in the plier pivot. Maybe a spell in the freezer might stretch the plier rivet, as it tries to contract more than the thickness of the head?

I'm sorry, I'm clutching at straws here and may have misunderstood the underlying issue  :-\

Ill try freezing the tool, that might help.
 :salute:
And yes, the pliers arent too tight, but the handles dont have any friction at all. Not in the close or open position. WD40 actually took the last friction away, making things worse.
 :)
I was so waiting to use this tool, it has those new extra large teeth on the pliers too.

I'm kind of worried that, with the loose handles, if you loosen the plier pivot, you'll end up with a very floppy charge.  :ahhh
Maybe I'm wrong?

Is there no way to tighten up the handle pivots instead?
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)
